Re-painting stripped bottom

I have 22 ft walk around.

I have stripped all the antifouling off with Interlux 299e, except for a very thin layer that you can see thru.

I use an in/out service and do not keep the boat in the water. Sometimes maybe a week on occasion once a year, but mostly in/out.

I would like to paint the boat with a product that I do not have to paint again, some sort of non-antifouling paint. I heard you can use top-side paint, but you can only leave your boat in a day or so.

Any suggestions.

Thanks

Re: Re-painting stripped bottom

Bob,

Search the forum for "epoxy paint" or for my member ID 3800 and look at that thread. It has an e-mail to me from Interlux and some other comments on paint recommendations.

I am going through the same process and will be using a two part paint, not sure if I am going to use interlux or Awlgrip just yet. Cost is an issue.

Peace.

Ed.

Re: Re-painting stripped bottom

You can use a top-side paint, but as you noted, you don't want to keep the boat in the water more than a few days. I would recommend a good 2-part linear polyurethane (a.k.a. LPU) and matching primer.

I used paint and primer from System Three. It is a water based 2 part LPU. It is a very tough paint. Awlgrip and Interlux (same company) have an excellent color selection, are glossy, but are solvent based. If you are going to spray them, you need the right gear. All can be applied, with good results, using a roller to apply the paint and follow-up with a brush to "tip" the paint (knock out air bubbles and smooth the finish).

Thanks Guys'

OK I took all the bottom paint and found some marine tex..UH! Will the paint stick to this?

I also talked to the System Three people and they said they think you could leave the boat in the water up to a month!

Any thoughts on this.

Bob

Paint will stick to Marine-tex as long as it's prepared according to the paint manufacturer's recommendations. The anti-fouling paint stuck didn't it?
