Hi All

I'm a little dizzy going through all the repainting threads...

I've got a 14 ft aluminum with an existing paint job that is just faded and old looking but for the most part intact (nomajor chips or big dings just a few wear spots)

Here is my plan. Lemme know if Ive gone wrong.

Clean and sand with 400 grit

Apply chromium primer to the few bare spots inside and out.

Prime with rustoleam marine metal primer then top coat with the rustoleam marine top coat. (link to product below)

I've read some places that you need an anti fouling paint for below water line and in others people have said no prob with the rustloeum. The anti fouling paints are $$$ .

The boat doesn't sit in the water it's trailered if that makes a difference. Do you think it will last or am I wasting my time not buying the expensive paint fir below water line?

Thanks!

Sand and clean with 150 grit.

Prime the bare spots with zinc chromate.

No need for antifouling paint if the boat is trailered, just make sure your paint is suitable for below the waterline and not a "top side" paint.

Thanks for the info.

I guess that was my main question. The rustoleum says not for below water line. Can I get away with the rustoleum primer for the whole boat and go with something else for the bottom of the boat? If so what paint would you recommend for below water line?

I'm in Canada so my product availability may differ from yours.

Thx

Unless you plan on keeping it in the water for extended periods of time (like weeks) you'll have no issues with regular Rustoleum/Tremclad/Valspar Implement paint.

Cool thats what I was hoping to hear... I suppose even if the bottom of the boat has a more beat up look that's' fine.

Best thing about Rusto is you can touch it up every spring and it will look like new. Ace Hardware sells Rust Stop, it's rebranded Rusto and they will tint any color you want. Use the oil based paint too. Thin with mineral spirits. Roll it on with a good foam roller.

Avoid any kind of antifouling paint. It reacts with aluminum and causes pitting.
