RE: Mercruiser I/O 496
Have a 2005 496 Merc. Bought it used. Runs great but every once in a while I hear a loud banging noise. It sounds like a very very very loud popcorn machine. You hear it about 5 or 6 bangs and then that is it. No more noise. Water is not ruff, running 30 MPH. Might not hear for hours and then hear it 2 or 3 times or might hear it more but then that is it. Thought at first it was a hose back by the engine with a metal connector on it banging on the bottom of the boat. So I sliced a piece of a noodle over the metal but that was not it. Any ideas. Just bought the boat, put 20 hours on it on a weekend before we heard anything. Might not hear it for 5 house running but then hear we go again. Does not affect the performance of the motor, just really worried it is something big. Dealer suppose to check out next week, but it does not always make the noise so if they don't hear it?????? Almost sounds like a car back fire but with a metal ting to it.
