Re: fiberglass repairs

the original Force motor was removed from my 84 Bayliner Capri, an aluminum plate was placed on inside/outside of the transom supposedly to accomodate the new Johnson mounts. The previous owners accidentally backed into something and cracked the transom . . it's not leaking at full load but I wonder if there is a way to fix the cracks and dispose pf the aluminum plates, reglass the back end and place the motor back on?

Plates like that are often used when the transom becomes weak from rot. Check to be sure there's no rot inside your transom. You can drill small holes and look for wet/rotten shaving on drill bit. For rebuilding transom, I'm sure you'll get some good advice here in this forum, but also search the General Boating forum. This is a fairly new forum and there were several of this type thread in General Boating a few months ago. Also, look at www.rotdoctor.com (think that's right) for some good info.

BL...

Re: fiberglass repairs

BL is right, The plates help support the engine when you have rot.. I had cracks in my self bailing area from the rotten plywood.. I am replacing my transom on my Nitro Bass Boat.. I did a search under "transom replacement" and found a lot of good info..

It's actually not as hard as it sounds, so far the hardest thing for me was the removal of the old plywood.. I am putting Coosa Composite "Blue Water 20" in place of the plywood.. this stuff is awsome..

Re: fiberglass repairs

if you have cracks in the fiberglass .. then the wood core inside is already wet.. which is a bad thing..

if you patch the cracks with layers of fiberglass cloth ,, feather edge the edges ,, sand ,,prime & paint,,you'll still have a wet core transome.. an rot will surely come your way..

If you find out your wood transom is rotten, check out http://www.transomrepair.com. Seacast replaces the rotten wood in boat transoms and stringers. It is almost triple the strength of marine plywood and won't rot. The hardest part of the whole project will be getting all the wood out!
