Asking for a friend of mine? I do not believe it is a good idea but maybe someone on here may prove me wrong. It is a bassboat.

"While I'm beached I thought I'd recarpet the boat. Two years ago I replaced the deck and like an idiot, used the old carpet. Now its tighter than tight. Can't rip it off. Tried a heat gun but the carpet dissolves before the glue gets soft leaving nothing to pull on.
I'm thinking about using the present carpet as a pad and gluing the new right over it. Anyone ever try this? Any thoughts on the subject?"

Fire up a grinder with a wire brush to remove the old carpet

Problem solved !! He tried a wallpaper steamer a couple of hours ago and that softens the old glue enough to peel it.

Good to hear, but why glue the carpet down ?? On the boats I have added carpet to, I just stretched it out and stappled it in place, on ocassion I might add a small dab of glue on areas hard to hold down. Glue can be such a mess to remove as you are finding out.
