I've been mulling this over for a year or so, whether or not to have a capacity plate made. I've made legal inquiries and technically, I'm not required to have one. I have an email from the sheriff's dept. that patrols the lake occasionally stating so.

But, with all the attention my Jet Star has been getting on the lake (awww :redface:), I figure if the sheriff's patrol sees me, it will be a curiosity magnet, so I thought I'd get one just to avoid any potential hassles.

Someone on here recommended a local awards place last year who did theirs for $12-15, but I haven't seen them on for a long time so I forget who it was. It's a few miles from home, so I took the original and a print of roughly what I wanted and went there to inquire this morning. They gave me a real bum's rush and obviously weren't interested in the least bothering with it. They wanted $20-25 for a 2x4.5" one and wouldn't even show me a sample of the material it would be on. And couldn't (wouldn't?) do any custom fonts. But I'm not too particular about that anyway. So here's a bash if you live in my area: don't bother going to Walsh's Awards in Cohoes, NY for a small job.

I did (a lot) of research online and finally found a place that was willing to make me a single engraved capacity plate for a very reasonable price. Most places I found only did the work in quantity.

A-1 Engraving Service http://www.a1engravingservice.com/Plastic-Tags.html will do it, and their service was fast.

I made up a file in Photoshop of what I wanted, and emailed to inquire about it. You can also have them make it by filling out the order form on their website, but I had an extra line, and one line included italics, so it's best to email them if you want anything non-standard. They got back to me the same day with a price and instructions. (You still have to place the order on their website and pay with Paypal, but they follow any instructions you have sent in the email). They can also do logos if you really want to get fancy, and say they have many companies' logos in their archives, but I didn't bother with that. There are also options for two-sided tape or not, and square or rounded corners.

So for a 2-1/2" x 4" plastic engraved plate on the UV resistant material, the cost was $14.95 plus $6.80 for First Class shipping, and it took less than 3 days from my first inquiry until I had it in my hands (Arizona to NY). Fantastic service by my standards.

The surface is more textured than it appears in the photo:

Very nice, wish I had found them earlier. Anyhow, just out of curiosity, I sent an estimate request. Looks like they are decals, I couldn't find any reference to a plate on the site? Somehow I overlooked the Starcraft ones they offer, those are nice & the price looks good too, don't know what the shipping is. I suppose you could stick it to your own piece of plastic and mount it with screws if you wanted to.

Edit: Found that there is no shipping and handling charge.

They sell them on their website as one of the ones in stock

I just received an answer to my inquiry. I sent them a scan of my original foil plate and to "duplicate" that, they will charge $30. They say it will be "Black and silver on color" whatever that means. They would duplicate the logos on it too.

I suspect that tale may be too painful to re-tell... I'm guessing that it isn't shipped in certified green packaging w/ extra care & handling...

I have seen those plates and labels mounted in the weirdest places.

On my SS it is located where my throttle is and my throttle cover's it as the same as the guy before me. I have see them mounted on the Passenger console, on the passenger front bow seat, on the transom. I really do not think there was any one place that was standard. Oh, on my 14' Starcraft it is on the "drivers" side of the transom.

Nice clean looking plate and your's is on the passenger side of the transom.

I blame the added cost on: Paypal, my credit union, and myself for being in too much of a hurry and making outdated assumptions.

It does look nice but I have less than happy feelings associated with it ! It is 2-1/2 x 4". Fact is, I don't really need one for that boat according to the letter of the law, but I wanted to try to avoid any problems due to possibly mis-informed sheriff's deputies.

Too late for lakelover, but anyone else that happens by this thread looking for a place to make a capacity plate, try OfficeMax or OfficeDepot. I ordered a custom engraved 4x6 brass plaque (AKA capacity plate) online from them and it was only $15 for the plaque. They offered free shipping for orders over $25 back then, so I added some office supply junk to the cart to get the free shipping.

Post a pix of what that brass plate looks like. Not sure I'd really like a bright brass plate until it seasoned some, but I guess that could be faux patina'd...

I may add the plate back to the next tin, and the FireFlite. The Jet is reg/titled w/out it & it's not required by the DMV here. But, moving forward, I think I'd like plates in the others. And preferably not a sticker, foil or not:facepalm:

If only for $15-20 it is valid in Ohio, which is a sticky wicket when all is not present: uscg plates, reg, titles & vin #'s.... Other border states may or may not be the same as WV or Ohio....

For a very similar reason, I got a refund check from Bank of America. I don't even remember the overdraft charges, but apparently there were, and frequently across the US w/ many acct holders. Got sued & lost. The check came over 3 years after I closed the account. No BofA in WV :facepalm:

Glad the plate turned out good, $72 for a POS would not have helped
