Hey, i would appreciate any help i can get! I bought a RDS-22c recently and the lower gearbox for the prop shaft had gotten some moisture in it and the 3 bearings are rusted and no longer turn. i know there are ways to free them up but there is a lower end on ebay for a 1953 25 HP and it looks the same to me, but im not sure if the lower unit on ebay will be of use to me. Basically, the one on Ebay is very inexpensive, and i would like to know if is strong enough to bolt on to my 40hp motor coming from a 25hp. It looks to me like it will, but i dont want to purchase something i wouldnt use! Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't buy it. The 25hp motors had smaller gears and may not hold up well, on a 40. What I would do is pull your's apart and overhaul it, so you know you'll have a rebuild. It's a very simple job and parts are available.

1953 gearcase won't fit a 1960 40hp, bolt pattern is different. So is the water pump/cooling system. The internals are also different, in case you think about swapping the innards. Don't even think about it.

Oh yes, that's right. The lower units from 1954 and prior are a 4 bolt and 1955 and later are 5 bolt. Lower units from 1958 on Super Quiet(RDS-20) models will work, but it has to be a Super Quiet model, like yours is, because of the water pump set up.

Re: RDS-22c lower ends

Thanks a lot guys! i do appreciate it! The three bearings are siezed on my lower end, but the gears have a little surface rust. Would it be fine to just replace the bearings? If so, is there an inexpensive place to order them from?

Look in the Top Secret File and try one of the salvage yards listed within.
