I have an 06 350 mpi motor with a failed raw water pump. I have repaired this in the past with a new impeller shortened to accommodate a wear plate. Mine is the original pump, all brass. I had ordered from a company that is no longer in business but my recollection was I got a wear plate that is about an inch and a half or so in diameter, a special impeller and a new o ring AND I'm thinking a metal thin wear plate for the other side of the impeller. I see some other kits out there that have a plastic back plate but that is not what I have.
I did order a kit that has everything but a back plate but just seems if I have grooving going on that wore out the wear plate I would have the same issue on both sides of the impeller...have not pulled the pump yet. Florida water is a lot of shallow sand water and it grooves the pump body losing suction way before the impeller comes apart...am I on the right track with the kit ordered ? If the back plate is grooved them the pump is not going to work...

So how come these kits don't come with a back plate wear plate?
Not sure what kit you're referring to but ime there are two sizes of impeller. A white hub impeller is a standard/original style size impeller with no wear plate in the housing, red hub impeller is .030" shorter and requires a wear plate in the housing

The housing cover is either solid brass or plastic with a stainless wear plate. Can't recall ever seeing a brass cover with a wear plate. If the brass cover has grooves you can sand the entire cover down to remove the grooves by placing sandpaper on a flat surface and moving the cover over the paper in a figure 8 motion. The plastic cover wear plate is replaceable but can also be reused on the other side with slight modification

This is of course referring to oem components, I have no clue as to aftermarket parts

Looks like there is a separate backing plate you can get also- why they even sell a "kit" without is a mystery to me. If one ens is messed up the other is...must be a reason so I have that now ordered...
