Raw water intake on 73 glastron?

Hello all. I bought a 1973 glastron v-179 inboard starflite about a month ago for 550 dollars and have been doing some minor repairs in hopes of getting her out on the water soon. I am new to boats and do not know alot about them so the question I have might seem kind of dumb. Where exactly is the raw water intake? I found a hole that looks like it is some sort of intake above the drain plug at the back of the boat, but Im not sure if it is it. I thought a strainer would go over this, but I found another intake hole that looks exactly the same facing it on the back side of the out drive. Im not sure if outdrive is the correct term, but its the thing that sticks out in the water and has the prop on it. Now I am thinking maybe a hose is missing that is suppose to connect the two. Im sorry if Im not explaining this well, but any information on the water intake system on these boats would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys. P.S. If my explanation isnt very good I can probably post some pictures that would help.

Im not sure if outdrive is the correct term, but its the thing that sticks out in the water and has the prop on it.

Ayuh,... Who's outdrive,..?? What Model,..??

there should be little hole on both sides of the out drive(the part in the water with the prop on it) towards the bottom that is where the impellor sucks the water in and forces it through a hose in to the motor to cool it down.

Let's use a little logic here. Any holes in the stern of the boat will be above the water line when the boat is in motion on-plane so there is no way water could get to the engine through those holes. Follow? You also don't have an inboard -- you have an I/O (inboard/outboard) which means you have an engine inside the boat like an inboard, but the drive system is like the bottom half of an outboard. A true inboard uses a "V" drive setup where the prop is on a drive shaft that protrudes from the bottom of the boat at an angle. So, the logical conclusion is that the raw water pump which is located in the "outdrive" (the thing sticking out the back of the boat). It is a rubber impeller driven by the vertical drive shaft. It takes in water through ports in the side of the outdrive housing, sends it up the drive and into the engine. Do yourself a favor and obtain a service manual for your specific engine/outdrive. You will quickly learn the various systems and save yourself hours of aggrevation wondering what things are and how they work and most importantly, it will save you a bunch of money by avoiding those costly mistakes and unnecessary repairs due to using the "shotgun" technique for troubleshooting.
