Re: rare sight in my neck of the woods
No mistaking a mature Bald Eagle.
White head, white tail, black body, yellow beak and legs. As a general rule if a large bird soars with its wings horizontal, it'll be a bird of prey, Hawk, Osprey or Eagle. If one soars with the wings in a slight V shape, it'll be a Buzzard or Vulture.
I'll see different Bald Eagles as many as a dozen times a month. I've watched the local nesting pair breed in air. Last summer we watched a pair of downeys grow and leave the nest, both larger then the parents it seemed.
It's said to be rare that both eggs will hatch and two eaglets survive. Yet I've parked my boat under the branch of a Valley Oak that grows over the river with all four Eagles in the same tree.
As common as they've become, they are always a pleasure to see.
