Re: Rainbow Trout

BV & PFB, i will do that! i've broiled (wrapped)fish and thought it too smelly, but it might have been a fluke of the chef(me). and it was at home on the grill. so i will do the foil wrap next yr. my buds & I promised to make the Tellico trip a thing to do from now on, every year...the first get together(nov8-10) we kept 3 trout & i brought them home to eat later. i cooked salmon on the propane bbq grill, taters & full husk corn in the fire, and they were great. but if we had caught the fish like we wanted it would've been different...so on to the next years menu ;)

RossJ, i don't know about other states, but here in GA, the trout streams don't allow live minnows. but earthworms & corn are ok.

the real kicker was (4 guys, 4 boys) when one of the women called, and the 10yr old answ... they were asked if we caught any fish- the boy said "yeah! and we're eating fish now!" and his mother said "oh, i was worried you might not be able to make it on your own out there in the wilderness!"...

ebb, she must have been a "real" city girl. LOL.

Bv, $200.00 fine to turn the fish back, in this lake. It's close to the house is it's big attraction.

Peterfishbuster, I am going to use lemon with the next batch.

The last fish I fixed I did the foil, stuffed the cavity with chopped onion, white pepper, butter on top, and cooked in the grill. It was great, not a bite left. Also fixed catfish, blue gill, and bass, not in foil but hickory smoked. yum yum! I have used the foil pouches since I was 8 years old. The guys and I would grab the poles, salt, pepper, a stick of butter, and some foil, Mom new we might not be back for days! But it was a different world then.

Re: Rainbow Trout

RWise I am not a big fish eater but I do like fresh cooked fish now and agian especially on an open fire. I have been known to roast a fish on a stick over a fire with just salt and pepper just for the taste but usually I don't eat fish. I started carying alum. foil in my later years because I ran into some fishing buddies that would bring drinks but no food (no money for it usually). I would get out my lunch and be badgered untill I gave half of it away to feed the 3 starving guys (yeah right they were all big men like me). Anyway one day I hid the food. I kept a few fish and headed for shore to build a fire. Cut some sticks and roasted the fish. I then pulled out my lunch and said from now on here is mine there is yours. Soon after I developed the foil wrap (asked around for a better way). You can use almost anything to season your fish by this method but the butter is not optional. We had many a good shore lunch doing this and a few offshore lunches when I brought a little gas grill because I did not want to waste fishing time.

Re: Rainbow Trout

If your still wondering what might work for bait I use berkly power eggs. I always start with a combination of chartruse and orange. That usually works on Lake Tanneycomo in Missouri. We fish off the bottom sometimes using a slip weight with a 14 inch 4lb test leader. The hook is a number 8. If your in a boat and they are not biteing I always troll very slow floating the bait at different depths to see where they are. Are you still trying to catch them ? Hope this helps.

Dennis
Yes I went out Monday, caught my limit of 5! We can use 2 rods, the 2 I had with me have 6lb line and the old rod out casts the newer rod. It was very slow, so I took the rod that casts further put on a pink power egg with glitter, cast as far out as I could get. That’s where they were! For now I am bank fishing and find them just past the weeds around the lake. I was one of the few (without a boat) that limited out!

The last one I caught was 1.5-2lb, but looks like some kind of crossbreed. The coloring was similar to the rainbow, but had a jaw like a salmon and the flesh is pink!

Richard

Re: Rainbow Trout

Took my wife to the White River here and we caught the heck out of some Rainbow's. They changed the limit from 6 to 5 and now you can only use 1 rod per person. My wife kicked my butt. We were using nightcrawlers on 4lb test with ulta-lite rods. My 3yr old daughter caught her first fish on her little fishing pole. It was a 6" brook trout. We had alot of fun and my daughter loves fishing now. Cant wait until she is older. She will be my fishin buddy.
