Quote to replace shift cable.

I called a local marine place asking for a part and was curious what they charged to replace a shift cable on an MC-1. I was quoted 4-5 hours of labor + parts with a 3 week lead time. 4-5 hours seems rather high. How long does it really take for a shop to do the job? I would have guessed a pro could do it in under and hour.

Re: Quote to replace shift cable.

As it's an MC-1 it is at least 30 years old. That means a lot of corrosion and possibly some seriously seized parts. Also, the old cable is screwed in from the front of the bell housing and the new one goes in from the back. That means it's harder to get the old one out (don't ask how I know ) and the threads in the hole need cleaning up, from the front, and that means the bell housing has to be removed too... Working on a relatively new drive, a shift cable replacement takes around 2.5 hours. . I'd say the 4-5 hour quote for a 30+ year old unit is not so fanciful....

Wow, 3 hours seems like a lot. That seems like how long it would take me. I guess I'll have to actually do it once to find out. :D

If I couldn't get my current one to seal right I may get some extra practice at it anyhow. ;)

Remove out drive. Remove cable. Replace Cable. Adjust cable. Replace out drive.

You make it sound so simple, maybe you should start a new career as a marine mechanic. Try timing out each of those steps, I think you'll hit the 2.5 hours I said quite quickly.....

Haha. Good point. I think I'll stick to computers and programming.

Re: Quote to replace shift cable.

All my servers run linux. I'd run it on my "battle station" if I could get all my monitors to work correctly. I have three Benq XL2420TX's. My computer costs more than my boat did.

I have been using OpenSuSE on all my computers since about 2000.

Using Fedora 18 x64 on this one. I have Winblows on one laptop that I have to run Turbotax (once a year) on but that's about it.

My phone, car GPS, Airplane (Lowrance) GPS, and the marine Lowrance HDS-5 in my boat all run it!

It's everywhere!

It MUST be a conspiracy!
