I have a 1989 Johnson 12/24V trolling motor model BF4Y that quits on speed #6 sometimes. After letting it sit for a few minutes it starts back. It does not do it on any other speed. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to check?

Just acquire this motor? Did this always occur, or did the problem just occur? Spin the prop by hand and see if it rotates harder than normal. Check for any fish line wrapped around the prop shaft (prop removed). If all is ok on the bottom end, the circuit breaker in the main hot lead to the motor is opening due to current draw higher than the breaker rating. The breaker is an automatic reset type and as it cools, resets and away you go. If the motor is tight (binding) it will draw more current so the breaker opens. Or, the breaker may just be too small. If a fuse is used in the main line, forget all of the above.

Thanks Upinsmoke, This just started this summer. I changed the prop and made sure no line was around the shaft about a month ago. Could it just be the age of the motor or the circuit breaker getting weak?
