Quicksilver Throttle-Shift Control Cable Replacement Help

I need to replace the control cables for my Mariner (it is a 1982 as is, I assume, the controller and cables). I've removed (with a little help from some vice-grips and a "Grabbit") the controller and pulled off the back cover to expose the cable ends. I'm not sure what the next step would be. It appears I need to do some dissassembly, but I don't want to dig in any more than needed and create additional problems (like not being able to get it back together [the correct way] again).

Attached photos show the business end of the controller and the inside, where the cables are attached.

Appreciate any assistance on how to disconnect the cables and what to be careful not to disturb to avoid messing up the mechanism.

Obviously you need to remove the clamp (two different kinds of screws) that holds the barrel nuts. The cable ends are usually secured with pins and cotter pins. You shouldn't need to touch anythng else.

Looking at the cable end (see attached close-up), there are no cotter pins. It looks like I have to remove the nylock nut and maybe the little bracket comes off as part of the cable end? The other cable has a similar (but not identical) bracket on the end. Will I need two different cables?

I'm leery of disassembling things when I don't know how they function. Seeing that big fat spring in there I envision a "sprongggg" and parts flying all over the place if I make a wrong move.

Maybe you only have to loosen loosen that locknut.

According to my manual you undo the nut and lift off the plate, it has the pin pressed into it.

Manual? You have a manual? Did you find it on-line (and where)?

Does the manual indicate if the new cable comes with a plate already installed, or if you press the pin out of the old cable and then back in to the new cable? If this is the case, any thing in the manual on the proper technique for pressing out the pin?

I found it online from someone's suggestion, anyway this is what it shows for the mounting; I think that the pin slides out of the hole in the cable end. You may need to use some penetrating oil on it and a screwdriver.

Wow! What a great forum. It's not an exact match for my controller, but close enough that it clears everything up. Once again I'm able to move ahead as a result of the input.

Much appreciated!

Re: Quicksilver Throttle-Shift Control Cable Replacement Help

The saga continues. Got my new cables (Teleflex) after a hassel with West Marine wasted 3 weeks. Compared new cables to old - they were identical. Installed new cables in the controller exactly (as best I can determine) like the old ones were installed. Didn't disturb anything except the cable end attachments in the Quicksilver controller.

Problem: Controller in neutral. Shifter on engine in neutral. Engine cable end is about 1 1/4 inch too short of connecting to shifter arm (see attached photo). The connector is only screwed on to the cable end about 4 turns, so there is no more adjustment possible.

Photo of cable end connections in controller (Quicksilver Commander as best I can determine) also shown.

What am I missing? I know it is something stupid that I should have picked up on right away. I can't remember if the controller arm was in neutral when I hooked up both cables. Could that have caused the problem?

Help.
