Quicksilver neutral button stuck

I have a generation one Alpha one 1987 Quicksilver shifter. I cannot throttle in neutral to help start my 3L engine. Fortunately I can throttle into gear, forward and reverse, but the carb seems thirsty on starting, and I have to disconnect the throttle linkage and manually rev the engine to effectively start it. I have diligently researched this issue in the forums, and there are good descriptions of how to remove the throttle arm, but how does this throttle button pin work, and what does it look like? I found this parts diagram, and I wonder if part #12 is the pin, but this diagram seems vague and certainly not descriptive. Is there a spring behind the pin? I want to know what I am opening before I starting tearing my shifter apart to even try to lubricate the pin.http://www.perfprotech.com/store/assembly/REMOTE-CONTROL-ASSY,1989-90.aspx#assembly This may seem like beating a dead horse, but no one seems to know the mechanism behind how this pin/button disengages the shifter cable from the throttle control arm.

Ayuh,... pin #12 is the neutral lock, the push button in the center of the lever disengages the shift cable...

This is the diagram you need: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...ng&inbr=1989&bnbr=40&bdesc=MODULAR+COMPONENTS
It has been a long time since I had mine apart, but I kinda think it works this way: Normally (button not pushed) the handle is locked to part #8, and when you move the control it rotates #21 which turns #15 and moves the shift cable, the throttle cable also moves. When you push the TO button it moves assembly #27 in which allows parts# 22-25 to slide and moves a couple of balls and pin which disengages the gear (21) so only the throttle lever moves with the control handle. Chances are that those parts are a little dirty or corroded in there and are stuck, just need to be cleaned and lubed to work properly. The handle is held on by a setscrew underneath. Good luck.

Re: Quicksilver neutral button stuck

Wow, this throttle control box is a real nightmare. I was so looking forward to tackling and fixing that throttle only pin mechanism, BUT Phillips head screws are seized, and they laugh at penetrating oil. After I drilled out the 4th screw, I realized the box was toast and I found a used replacement unit for $80. Looks better anyway, because I had already relocated the trim/trailer switches to my dash console anyway, and the replacement throttle is older and does not have the trim mechanism on the throttle. And yes, the "throttle only" button does work! Hail the Mercontrol unit! I dont need a Quicksilver afterall. Sometimes older and simpler is better...
