Quick Thermostat Gasket Question - DON? Bond-O?

I'm redoing the thermostat gaskets in my thermostat housing and the service manual says to use a stainless steel plate between the two Thermostat Cover Gaskets. When I took it apart, there wasn't a steel plate there, so I'm confused.

Attached is a pic. Its #8 on the pic (#8 says 2 gaskets) this pic doesn't have the plate, but the service manual seemed to say there was a plate between these 2 gaskets.

So my questions are these.

1.) Do I need the steel plate between the 2 gaskets? If so, I have no idea what the part number is.

2.) If I don't need the steel plate, should I use 2 gaskets right next to each other?

3.) OR, should I just use 1 gasket?

The gasket part number 27-41812 x 2 qty

Thanks!!!

Re: Quick Thermostat Gasket Question

Re: Quick Thermostat Gasket Question

I just did the same thing on my boat - but I needed a gasket that has crushable copper bits (yes I know, highly technical).

I have the temp gauge sending unit in the thermostat housing. The copper is there to provide the completion of the electrical circuit (ground) for the gauge to operate.

I am thinking that maybe this is what the steel plate is for.

If you don't put the steel plate in, you only need one gasket.

Maybe they superseded the steel plate with a new gasket that has the same thing I have.

Re: Quick Thermostat Gasket Question

I got an aftermarket kit for my thermostat (Sierra I think). It had eleventy million gaskets in it and one of them was two gaskets with a metal place sandwiched between them. It was one piece. Everything was glued together or something. I imagine that's the one you want (it's even shaped like in the picture with the tongue on the end).

Re: Quick Thermostat Gasket Question - DON?

I recommend getting the OEM kit and see what is in there, not just one gasket. There may even be an addendum paper in the kit explaining a new superseding setup. I bet if you tried to order just the gasket it would only be available as part of a kit.

No, I ordered all Quicksilver parts based on the part numbers. That diagram I posted doesn't have the part numbers, however there is another doc that goes with it that has the Mercruiser/Quicksilver part numbers. And the steel plate is not on it.

So.....I'm leaning toward not using the plate and 1 gasket.

For your serial number, there isn't even a parts listing that has that SS plate, so how would you get one? Second of all the parts fit togethter different from what you have.
It's been working for years the way it is in the diagram you posted and what you actually have, so why the big problem with one picture in the manual?

When I took it apart, there wasn't a steel plate there, so I'm confused.

Ayuh,......... If it were Me,...........

If I didn't find it there when I took it apart,+ it had been running Right,........
And,... I found that I Couldn't Find a listing for the Plate,.....

I'd probably question Why the 'ell Merc would want 2 steel plates back to back, with a gasket,+ Nothing else between them, mounted to the top of the T-stat housing under the lifting lug,...??....
('course, if I Did find the plate, I'd still be asking myself That question)

Then I would bolt it back together Exactly as I found it, Without the Plate.......

But that's just Me,..............;)

Because I'm a paranoid freak and don't want my boat to break down :D

See, the problem is, the pic of this assembly calls for 2 of those gaskets. The manual indicates there is a steel plate that goes in between them. I don't have the plate.

So should I just use 1 gasket or 2, as the information (that goes with the picture) says I need?

No, those are 2 different gaskets.

I've attached the spreadsheet showing the quantity required.

Re: Quick Thermostat Gasket Question - DON? Bond-O?

Don, what I'm trying to figure out now is whether I should use 2 gaskets or 1 gasket under the thermostat cover? (since I won't be using the SS plate between them)

Thoughts?

Heh, I'm just trying to "do it right the first time" :D

Re: Quick Thermostat Gasket Question - DON? Bond-O?

i'd only use 1 gasket... stacking gaskets is asking for a leak. I would but a little gasket adhesive on both sides of it though.
personally i use 3M 847... works well.
