Im looking at buying a Evinrude Lark II and the model number is 35530L does the "L" in the model number mean that it is a Longshaft my boat has a 21" transom. I was taking a back road on the bike on my way home and spotted it out in someones yard for sale love when that kinda thing happens.

Also while im asking will controlls for a evinrude Speeditwin work for the Lark?

thanks in advance

1962 40 hp. Manual shift. The L and M are factory run numbers. There are parts differences between the L and M models.
I believe the 35530L/M is a short shaft and a 35531L/M is a long shaft.

The shift/throttle controls from the Speeditwin will work on the manual shift Lark.

Your motor (35530) left the factory as a short shaft. That does not mean it was never converted to long shaft with the accessory kit. Some motors have been converted back and forth half a dozen times.

Re: Quick question regarding a LarkII

Nope. Lark II is a 1960. It's basically a 35 punched out to 43.9 cubes. Still has the high compression head that the 35 had.

The '62 is a Lark IV and has the later, upgraded powerhead. Larger crank and the head is different.

The best way to tell if that motor is a long shaft, is to see if there is a 5" section, above the lower unit.

I have a '57 Lark (to be fixed) and a '62 Lark 4 which runs great... The Lark 2's are ugly! (some think they are beautiful though!) But I'd snap it up also if I saw it for sale cheap :)

Re: Quick question regarding a LarkII

Yea, the 59 and 60 Lark hoods don't look that great. I like the 61 and later hood styling. The 61 kinda has the little fins on the side, like the 58 Super Seahorse 35. Both, my 61 and 62 are good runners though, after sitting for years and not doing anything to them, but clean up the ignition system. Those are great motors and very forgiving. Often times, fresh new gearcase oil and a new igntion system will do them justice.

I wouldn't mind finding a '57 Lark or Big Twin, but anymore, they don't seem to be as common as the later Super Quiet models. I just recently seen a '57 Big Twin on Craigslist, with a starter and controls, but it kinda looked rough.

Re: Quick question regarding a LarkII

Thank you very much i knew from lurking this would be the place to ask.

The owner wants $275 for it he said that it runs great but hasnt been used in a few years. no controls but the wiring is there. It needs re painted and the prop has some good nicks in it. I thought it looked short and the owner had no idea what i meant by long shaft. Ill try and see if i can find a extension kit online i would like to have this motor as it is close to the same age as my texas maid My wife and I would like to be able to atleast tube behind the boat and the rude 28 speditwin doesnt seem to be enough

Well, somebody has had their way with the numbers on that thing. 35530 and 35531 ARE 1962 numbers. Obviously not matching the hood. So, which have been swapped??????

Yep, that does match the numbers on my Lark IV. Those are actually the better motors. The hoods actually mount different from 60 to 61, so something does seem odd here. I believe the 60 model still had the spring latch in the front, wheras the 61 and later had the twist lever. Transom brackets could have been swapped out. Only way to tell, is to post a pic of the powerhead and get the numbers off the block.
