I just tonight obtained a 200 Mercury 20HP Model 3069467. It appears in exc condition. I believe that it is a 1971 No sure
Checked bottom unit, (no oil) appeared to be greese in there. Could there be instead of oil?
There are two screws i presume to fill at the bottom and force out the top> Is that correct?
Besides the top screw there is a small flat head screw. What is that for?

On the skag there are two real small holes. What are they for?
There is two crome like disk located on the bottom unit about half way up. What are they for?

Motor looks as if it could be converted to electric start by adding a starter. Is that correct?

I have no owners manuel or repair manuel and no library to obtain information from so any and all information would be an asset. Need to determine if motor is good before contract to purchase is made. Motor appears in outstanding condition as for as appearance is concerned. paint still on the original prop.

Re: Questions

The lower unit takes outboard gear lube. This is allmost the same as Hypoid gear oil, used in manual transmissions in cars, but use "outboard gear lube" only.
Yes, it is forced into the lower hole, until it comes out the top. While you still have the tube in the lower hole, install the upper screw with a new screw gasket. Then, quickly remove the tube from the bottom, and install the bottom screw.
It should only hold a few ounces (less than 12).

The holes in the skeg may have been for the mounting of a skeggard. Other than that, you got me.
The chrome disks are covering the water intake.
Yes, they can be adapted to electric start, provided the flywheel has teeth around the outside of it. If not, it can still be fitted with a starter, but you could buy another engine for what it will cost you.

Re: Questions

Yo ajohnston,
I can help with a couple of your questions:
1. Lower unit should have grease, not oil.
Grease should look like grease and not coffee w/cream. That would indicate the presents of water.
2. Bottom screw is for filling, top is for venting. Fill bottom until grease appears at top hole. Top and botton screws look alike. Don't know what other screw is. At the top of this page, there is a tab that sez "Manuals". Click on that and get a manual for that puppy.
Don't know about starter.

g'luck & c/6

Hooty
