i recently inherited a 1962 Lonestar Biscayne with a 1990 or so Evinrude 48 spl. can anyone tell me about the reliability or problems with this motor? It runs great - all I did was run some Seafoam through it and put in new spark plugs - but it bogs down and dies out when I troll for a while. Any ideas why?

Re: questions about the evinrude 48 spl

it is a fantastic motor, if you do not know when the impeller (water pump) and the carbs cleaned and rebuilt. DO IT. spark plugs should be Champion QL77JC4 if doing a lot of fast running, gapped at .030 if doing a lot of trolling gap them at .035.

thanks for the quick reply. I agree, it is a great motor. So, gapping the spark plugs to .035 will help with trolling? I fish in the often rough waters of lake erie so I usually don't run it too fast (the boat is only 16 feet). Are the carb and water pump hard to work on?
