I'm new to the forum and I need the following advise from anyone on this forum that may know if this is okay to do or not.

I have a 1995, 150-hp Johnson carburated and what I need to know is if I disconnect the wire harness at the red plug where both harnesses connect while the motor is running, would this affect or damage any electrical components on the motor like the powerpack, rectifier, stator, etc.

Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Re: question

I would advise against EVER disconnecting anything while the motor is running. Electrical parts are VERY expensive. Why don't you state just what and why you are planning to do...and Welcome to Iboats!

Re: question

The motor while in the water and is running at any given speed he runs fine, but while running at idle, he puffs or coughs like every 20 seconds or so, he won't turn off though.

Someone suggested that probably the carbs needed syncronization and adjustment or that perhaps was a problem with the key-switch.

What I was thinking of doing was to unplug the harness while the engine was running and if the problem was in the key-switch, then the motor would stop doing what is doing and like that I can isolate the problem, but if is not the key-switch, then it would be the carbs.

I tested all coils and they seem to be powering, I also checked the compression and is also fine, no water on the fuel, and none of the gas hoses seem to be broken or taking in air, so that is why I am trying to trouble-shoot it in the way I am suggesting.

What do you all think.

Re: question

Coughing or sneezing is usually due to lean running. Quite a few possible causes: a) crap in carb jets or needle valve c) stuck float d) air leak into crankcase, etc. As still points out, it's not a good practice to disconnect anything, especially battery terminals on a running motor. You need to get a shop manual (OEM) to have a decent chance to fix.

Re: question

If you want to isolate a problem, disconnect the red plug and then start the engine by jumping the starter out. Be aware that you will have to choke the engine to kill it, as your switch will not work....

Re: question

If the engine will not turn off when the key is turned off you either have a bad key switch or an open circuit on the kill switch wire, (black w/ yellow stripe)
The motor will start with the red plug disconnected but it will not turn off.
The key switch grounds the black/yellow wire in the off position which kills the spark at the power pack.
