Question on starting an outboard. And fuel line question(s)

So I just picked up a 1973 Johnson 20R73A 20 hp and had a question on how to start it. I'm pretty sure I know how but need a refresh. What do I set this dial to? And what is it's purpose?

I assume I pull the choke till the motor starts than close it. Right? Also, do I turn the throttle handle up or down to start?

Next questions is; when I hookup the fuel tank line to the motor it leaks like crazy. Can I just bypass the quick connector and run the fuel line straight to the manifold on the fuel pump? I plan to add a valve inline.

Any input would be great.

That dial is the idle mixture screw.-----Once set it should not need adjustment very often.-----I think the fitting on the hose is the wrong one.-----Turn the handle so it hits the neutral stop.----Install a new water pump impeller now.

I believe the dial is to set the idle SPEED. It's normally used to set your trolling speed, not mixture.

No need to hard wire the fuel lines. Your connectors are shot. Simply replace the connectors.

To start set the choke to full and then close it when the motor is running smoothly. Set the throttle to the "start" position, and then go fully to the "slow" setting, shift to forward and then advance as needed.

????--Nonsense -----It is the MIXTURE adjustment !!-------Idle speed is at the bottom of the tower shaft.----Ignore the " start " on the twist grip, turn handle to the neutral stop.----Check thermostat.-----They are often stuck open or missing.

Pop the wire link out off the SLOW SPEED mixture needle ( white nylon piece ) set it 1-1/2 turns out.----Start motor and adjust on the boat in the water.----Slide white nylon piece off the needle.----Slide it back on pointing to the right and horizontal.----Re-attach link to the knob.

I stand corrected. I have too many motors to remember the different vintage subtleties.

However, I did dig out an old '73 Johnson manual to reference the starting procedure. There is indeed a "start" setting, as well as "shift". Maybe you should ebay a manual. Invaluable reference.

After a second look, your female connector might be a Yamaha.

For best starting just ignore the " start " mark on the handle grip.----In neutral turn the handle grip till it hits the interlock !!

Unfortunately there are no markings on either the dial or on the handle grip.

Your fuel line leaks because you have a mercury fitting on the hose. They look similar but do not work with each other.
