I am selling my pontoon boat. Put new carpet and seats on it, now the striping on the aluminum wall siding doesn't match. I want to paint it. I imagine standard aluminum paint is the way to go, wonder if anyone has experience with this? Should there be any protective coating or anything?
I don't want to sell it and have the paint all flake off when it gets wet.

Thanks for any input.

Also, advice on painting the outboard would be appreciated.

Re: Question on painting alum

hi there, check out my link at the bottom of my post... its all about painting aluminum, with pics too..

as far as painting the outboard, i used the spray paint they sell at west marine and boaters world, both can be ordered online via each companies website.....they have origonal matching colors for each manufacturer...

dont worry bout the paint "flaking off" when it gets wet... do some home work on this before you jump in. i used interlux topside paints and as you will see from the pics, it looks brand new. give it a good week or maybe two weeks dependant on the weather for complete dry times. it will be dry to the touch way before that , but it can still be picked at and peeled for up to 2 weeks. i sanded the paint to bare aluminum and used interlux tokote blocking primer and 3 coats of topside paint. now i can see my reflection!!!

Re: Question on painting alum

I replaced the deck on my MV 17' alumacraft 3 years ago with .80 ths.alummiun, and used the nonskid truck bed liner, and it still looks like new. Prep the alummuim by sanding with 200 grit , wiped clean with acidtone, primed with zincchromate, wiped again, then used Duracoate nonskid poly paint. Any good auto or rustolem paint should be fine for the pontoons. I just got tired of replacing the wood deck and carpet all the time.

Best of Luck, Oldman570;)

Re: Question on painting alum

As long as you are painting over paint you can just do it, it should be scuffed of coarse but it shoudln't flake of if you scuff it.

As to the outboard it depends what you want it to be, you can paint it or you can do like phatman did and strip it and start over using top teir paint, just to spray bomb it is $12 to do it absolutely right is more like $300 and you need a compressor and spray gun.

I did mine 2 years ago and stripped it almost to metal, I used Autozone etching primer and Duplicolor paint then hit with real automotive clear and it looks better than new but it was probably a 20+ hour job, 18 of that being prep and 2 actually painting.

And a tip, DO NOT use 200 grit sand paper if you are painting, he was using very thick roll on paint, spray paint would never cover the scratches, you woudl want somthing more like a 400 for regular paint.
