question on lower unit seals

This may fall in the realm of careless/stupid, but I just refilled the lower unit on a DF140 and as I topped it off, gear lube began to seep out of the water intake ports. I am concerned I may have applied too much pressure and/or overfilled the lower unit. The top vent screw had been loosened/vented, but not completely removed, and I wonder if the pressure built to the point that lube blew past the seals. I also realized that the motor had not been completely trimmed down and the cav plate was not perfectly level to the ground.

So, my question is: Is it a certainty I've damaged the seals in the lower unit? Is it possible seals are still functional after this event. Any insights appreciated.

Re: question on lower unit seals

I had my engine serviced at a dealer and "checked out"before I bought it, and it had the same problem afterward.I took it back and got some lame excuse that translated into underpaid Dum@&$ changing the gear oil, when I told them what I thought caused it."We've never seen that seal fail before"Bla bla. They did fix it for free. But I had to drive 80 mi. round trip. And I had run the boat a 1/2 hr before I saw the leak. You level the motor w a level, the ground may not be level:eek:

I dont think that you have damaged the seals. The seals lips are somewhat flexible and tension held by a spring in some cases. But the only way to test it, is to pressure and then vacuum test it.
