I bought a 1975 6hp. evinrude from a guy who is an outboard mechanic, it runs ok except when I shut it off an drift fish for awhile I have to choke it and it takes 3 or 4 pulls to restart. I called him and he said that that was normal for those motors. is this true? otherwise it runs good. also would a 3 blade prop give me anymore speed? it"s has a 2 blade on it.

Not sure its "normal" but not that bad. No, prop change won't make much if any difference.

All of my motors start with one pull after they're warm. If you go at slow speed alot, plugs may be fowled somewhat. Take a new set with you next time, change them out after drift fishing and see if it fires right up.

Re: question on 6hp

yes it does, cold start and after drifting for half an hour the same, pull choke for 1 pull, push in choke, give half throttle, will start with 2 more pulls. guy says normal for those 6hp. motors, he rebuilt the carb, fuel pump, new water pump impeller, lower end seals. I believe he did all that, has a very good reputation around here.

I don't think its normal - I've owned several of them and have never had that issue. One thing that I have found with them, however, is that half choke sometimes results in easier starting.

I have a 1969 Johnson 9.5. After the first time starting it with the choke, it takes one pull with no choke for the rest of the day.

I have a 1966 9.5 also will start warm no choke, but that has nothing to do with the original post.

You might try to adjust the idle needle a tad bit more rotated counter clockwise. These motors start on the idle jet setting & sometimes they just need a tad bit more fuel to start after cooling off and not using the choke. If this is too rich for trolling, then reset the needle to your trolling/slow position after it warms up.

Re: question on 6hp

if I shut it off for 30 seconds it has to be choked, could the float be set to low? funny thing is it runs fine once it starts. I have had many outboards and never had one do this, I"m at a loss.

Have you tried richening the low speed idle a 1/4 turn or so?
