I have a 93 4.3LX Merc with the Weber carb. My choke is not working at all and it's making the engine hard to start cold. It uses the manifold/stove choke coil that sits in a housing on top of the manifold. I checked to make sure that the choke rod going from the butterfly to the coil is attached, and it is.
My question is, what should close the choke initially? Seems from what I remember from working on old cars that we would always press the accelerator to the floor once before hitting the starter and that would close the butterfly. Should it close if I push the throttle lever to WOT and return it to idle? On the opposite side of the carb from the choke coil, the choke butterfly is attached to another rod that attaches to a gold colored lever (see pic) that pivots on a post on the carb body. Is this supposed to be activated by the throttle lever somehow? Is just freewheels now.
