I have a 1983 regal166 with a 140 hp merc. inboard motor.I looks like I have a blown out freeze out plugin the back of the block. This is behind the starter and under the bell housing to the final drive unit. What is the best way to replace this plug. Should I pull the motor or do I pull the drive unit out. Is it possissible to replace this without pulling either one of these units. Any and all help would be great.
Thanks:rolleyes:

Nope,..... Can't Happen...

1st you pull the Drive,... Then the Motor,..
Then enough off the back of the motor to get too the Problem....

Up in the Adults Only section at the top of this forum is a Gold Mine of Information,...
Including the Factory manuals for your motor,+ drive...

Everything you need to know is There.... Good Luck...

You have to pull the engine, and you need to pull the drive to get the engine out.
The only reason for one of those plugs to come out like that is freezing water, which may have also cracked the block.

Thanks for the help. I have checked the oil and the oil is good. as fat as I can tell the block isnt cracked. But I really wont know till i get the motor out and look at it a little closer. Plus the guy who gave me the boat took it to a dealership and they told him that was the problem. All I can hope for is that mechanic knows what he is talking about.

I'm not getting warm fuzzies here.......

Pressure test the cooling system before you reinstall the engine in the boat.

What you got water coming out the back or something? Down behind the bell housing?

While it may be a core plug blowed out on the back of the engine it could also be a crack. The mechanic that checked it may have said it could be a freeze plug, but he wasn't allowed to take it apart to find out what it was. So his opinion is also just a WAG, because without pulling the engine and flywheel, you will never know exactly what the problem is.

That and a real mechanic would never utter the words "freeze plug" :)
