I've gone as far as I am comfortable going on my new to me 1998 J150ELECD used motor, preventive maint wise. I am going to schedule an appoint. with my local dealer to go over the motor and want your opinions on items for him to look at IF he should ask.

What I've Done:
1. compression
2. new impeller
3. plugs+wires
4. disc. OMS for now
5. new control cables
6. shift rod adj.
7. new t-stats
8. fuel/water seperator
9. new fuel lines

Re: Question for the mechanics

If a owner brings in a engine and tells me he did all this work to it,
i would go over everything he has done.
reason is that you will hold the mechanic responsible when he returns the engine back to you.
if you are not confident you have done it right, everything should be checked.
if you are confident you have done all this work right why bring it in?

you could clean all the grounds and battery connections.
have the prop checked out. Balanced
take a fuel sample from the tank.
do a Decarb.
pressure and vacuum check lower unit.
grease all fittings and prop shaft
check no oil, overheat, over rev, slow warning systems
check power trim fluid, top it off.
lubricate trim sender and shift switch.

plenty of stuff to do want more?

check all the bolts, wire routing, clamps zip ties etc.etc.

get the point

Re: Question for the mechanics

If I were the mechanic, I would do the compression test and check the link and synch, and change the gear oil, and clean the main strainer and change the water seperator and grease the zercs.

I would test the OMS pump and the 4 alarms, and siphon some oil off the bottom of the tank to look for water.

If I had any doubt, I would change the 'stats and water pump impeller.

Other than that, check the wiring and general condition of the motor, fuel leaks and run her a bit and look at the spark plugs for color.

Re: Question for the mechanics

I also would bay test the boat to make sure its propped out right. check if the engine is mounted right on the boat.
would do a decarb.

but the first thing that happens is that me or the service manager will talk to you about the motor and ask you a few questions.
like , how long do you own the motor, what is previous done to the motor, how many hours you think are on the engine etc etc.
if there was previous work done to the motor who did the work?

so taking in a job and working on it blindly is not how it works.
and its not a big deal to check over the whole rig.
it will not take a lot of time and you will have better piece of mind.
so i recommend tell them what you did and they will go from there.
there are plenty of things to check out.
