I'm looking at a buying an outboard powered boat. My prior boat was an I/O and that was before I moved to Georgia. If I was buying the boat in GA I wouldn't be asking, but since I do everything the hard way I'm looking at a boat in S. Carolina. States have different laws and I can't find an answer on the GA DNR website. Hoping you folks can help. Thanks in advance. :)

The question is: Does GA title/register outboards?

EDIT - The answer is no if anyone happens to run run across this thread.

I've owned 3 OBs that were not titled. The county you live in will have you "register" the boat and motor with county tax assessors and you will be charged property taxes based on their value. For purchase of 2 used boats, all I've ever had was a signed (not notarized) bill of sale. You will also register the boat with the state Dept of Natural Resources who will issue the registrations number and decal for the hull but no special number or decal for motor. For trailer, you will need bill of sale for the county tag office/tax commissioner (different office than tax assessor) for the trailer tag. The trailer is not titled.

These are for boats/motors/trailers I've bought new and used within the state. I'm not sure how your process will work bringing boat in from out of state.

I bought mine in south carolina and brought it home. Pretty much the same as blifsey said...
Pretty easy process.
They issued me a "homemade" trailer VIN being as I had no idea what model of trailer it was. The sheriff had to come by and look at the trailer to check it out. He signed the sheet, I took it back to Tag Office and they issued me the tag for it.

The answer is no, GA doesn't.

And bringing in a boat/motor/trailer into GA is very easy.....have done it a few times now.

All you need is the last owner's boat and trailer registrations/titles (if applicable) plus either a notarized or witnessed bill of sale.

Take bill of sale with appropriate registration/title (boat to DNR, trailer to local tax assessor's office in your county) and get your boat reg. number (can do it over the phone actually....then just fax a copy of all paperwork) and a registration and tag for the trailer. If either or both are titled, you surrender either/both to the state and never see another title for either as GA doesn't title boats or most trailers.

The outboard is irrelevant in the end. No official dept. in GA wants to know the SN or anything else about the OB motor, making GA one of the best states to sell a purloined OB motor. Not condoning or suggesting anything, but just what it is.

Thanks guys! That's pretty much what thought. I looked on the S. Carolina DNR site and they have titles or boats and outboards. On the GA they only talk about boat registration.

For the boat GA DNR says you need a bill of sale and prior registrations. A lot of boat are sitting in backyards and wives finally make the guy get rid of it. Paperwork is not to be found.

South Carolina is a little different. The outboard and the boat itself both have titles, but the trailer does not. The trailers here do not have license plates either.

Current GA boat registration laws (for the most frequently happened upon cases):

Transfer a GA Registration to a new owner in Georgia, the following are required:

Notarized or Witnessed Bill of Sale with complete vessel information and buyer/seller information.

Registration card from the previous vessel owner. If Registration has been expired, then submit a letter from previous vessel owner stating sale.

For all vessels Registered or Titled in another STATE. Vessel is now coming to Georgia:

Notarized or Witnessed Bill of Sale with complete vessel information and buyer/seller information.

TITLE (only for Vessels coming from a Title State) OR, Registration card of the previous Vessel owner or letter from previous State registration office.

Used Vessel with NO Registration. Vessels never Registered or Titled in any STATE.

Notarized or Witnessed Bill of Sale with complete vessel information and buyer/seller information.

Call 1-800-366-2661 for Vessel Registration Research and Verification with United States Coast Guard.

Not too hard in any case.

And if you think that's easy, in GA, once a vehicle is 17 years old or older, you don't need a title to sell the car/truck, just a bill of sale.

The second one is my case. I'm still waiting for a reply from the owner about the boat title, but earlier he said bill of sale for everything. I think I would need 2 BOS, one for the boat and one for the trailer since I'll be dealing with GA DNR for the boat and GA Dept. of Revenue for for the trailer.

I'm just happy I don't need emissions testing for my old truck anymore since it's now more than 25 years old. Talk about a rip-off.

Off topic question...what type boat or deal are you getting in SC? I would assume around the Allatoona/Lanier area you should be able to find a decent boat for good price without having to go to SC.

Good question - I'm looking at a 16 ft. 1966 Starcraft tinny run-about to restore. Something to keep me busy since I retired. And I'm talking a cheap (to start with) project. I've been looking for a candidate around here and not having much luck.

Thanks for your interest blifsey

BTW - I'm about 5 miles from Allatoona in Cherokee County.

The selection may be better, but the prices are higher, IMO.

Re: ???Question for Georgia boaters???

Well guys thanks for all your info/comments.

Here's the kicker! I asked him about the SC title and it started him to find out about getting it titled. He also started looking on Ebay. All of a sudden his boat turned to gold and he was taking it off the market! Damn, double damn.

I have time.

Bummer GA_Boater! Thanks for info on boat your were looking at. A good project boat does sound like it would be a little tougher to locate.
