I have a 1986 mariner 90hp which has weak spark on 3 cyl. only.I have checked with a dva meter and 1 low speed blue wire shows 140v the other blue low speed shows no volt at all, i have removed blk+yellow from switch and yellow to regulator. I assume my stator is bad but is there anything else I should check before spending the money to replace?

If it is weak on 3 cylinders of the same switchbox ..yes the stator could be weak or bad. If its only on #3 cylinder,no as the capacitor recieves the same voltage from stator to fire the other cylider on the same switchbox. The trigger will not cause weak spark as it triggers the SCR switces inside box and it is firing the cylinder. It will either be a switchbox or as possible coil problem such as a bad ground or internal ground is bad.

If this is a 6 cyl with two switchboxes, there are a couple more tests to rule out things.

First, disconnect the White Bias wires from both boxes and retest spark. Did that change anything?

Next, switch the stator wires between the boxes then retest spark. Did that switch the weak or no spark to the other three cyls?
