I just bought a 1987 Skeeter 16ft bass boat. I am a first time boat owner so I am pretty ignorant about how to fix a boat up. The gel coat is cloudy and flaking off. Is it possible for me redo the gel coat my self? Also, how improtant is the clear coat? I have heard that it is just cosmetic, but I wanted to ask you guys to be sure. Thanks for your time.

Re: Question about Gel coats

I have not doubt that the gel coat needs to be replaced. What does that entail? Do I need to bring it to a pro who will put it in a paint booth, or is there an over the counter alternative? I am kind of excited about doing it my self, just curious of what I would be getting my self into.

Re: Question about Gel coats

Gel coat is thickened polyester resin. It is to cover the cloth for a smooth appearance. Paint gives a higher grade finish, but gel coat is more durable and cheaper. High end yachts are painted with Imron or Awlgrip paint, to achieve the gloss and finish they desire.

Re: Question about Gel coats

Gel coat doesn't typically flake off, what happens on bass boats is when the clear gel coat starts to get dull and thin from chalking and/or buffing, the owner will have it clear coated with paint. Depending on the product used and the quality of the job, it can last a very long time, or only a year or two before flaking. Re-painting with a solid color is the best and easiest solution, it can be re-done with flake, but its a great deal of work

Ive been going to try it.Use a product called dura tech to thin.Spray gel with flake mixed or gell the use a flake buster to coat it.Then sevral layers to cover up the flake.Paint is easyest way but flaked gel is cool.Good luck.By the way gell needs to be sprayed out of a 2.5 tip gun.
