I have a mercruiser 3.0 with and alpha 1 gen 2 out drive. I hit a rock last year really well and I thought it was just the lower unit that was bad so I found a used one because I couldn't afford a new one. I replaced it and took it out and come to find out it's the whole outdrive that's toast. Can I still use the new to me lower even though I ran it with the bad upper and there are metal shavings all through it. I bought the upper but now I can't find another lower. Just wondering if I can flush the lower or clean it some how. Probably a stupid question and I apologize if it is.

Thanks Jason

Normally you will have to disassemble the lower to get all the metal out. If you have someone who has the tools and skills it probably wouldn't be that much (in comparison to buying a new one) to disassemble and reseal the lower, only issue is if there is damage from metal pieces then it may be a waste.

Did you look at an SEI aftermarket lower ?

A little metal can go a long ways on attaching themselves to bearings and gear tooth faces. While you might get away with using it for a bit, eventually you will fail it and potentially take out the replacement upper.

I did look at those but still a little pricey for me.
unfortunately, you may have the wrong hobby then…

they are a little more pricey but several sellers on eBay list ones that have passed pressure test and come with a short warranty. more money than craigslist etc but at Least you have some recourse if condition is misrepresented

If one scoffs at the phrase (BOAT) "break out another thousand", one really isn't in the position financially to continue owning a boat. That person would just likely would be paying property taxes, insurance, and fees on a devaluing/inoperative paperweight that just sits there.

If one is wise with their money spending on a boat, they would do a little more digging and research to minimize risk and maximize savings/value.

Affirm is a great option if you can't afford it all at once. It's not a credit card. It acts as small loans on your terms but only the total borrowed goes against your credit. Some retailers offer zero percent financing. It's how I afforded my new outboard. I did terms that I could afford and would pay it off quickly. I use their service all the time, but usually pay it off the next month. Boat ownership is expensive

Read the small print! If you spread the repayments beyond about 8 weeks, the interest rate is 10%. That's not small!
...Boat ownership is expensive
Now that IS a true statement.

True in some cases and all cases if you miss a payment. But Affirm shows that when you pick your terms. It's usually past a 3 month period but sometimes longer. I got my cell phone through Visible at 0% with Affirm. I still have not paid it off due to not costing me anything. It's $20/ month and just stuck on autopay. I think it was 0% for 12 months... In general, Affirm is about 15% so the $1,700 outdrive would cost about $250 more.
