Ok. This maybe a dumb question, but I found another motor for sale same year, horse power, looks identical in the pictures, but the serial is way different. I know typically with other equipment that's normal because it's a way to track the exact piece of equipment. Just want to make sure before I go on a long road trip that, that's normal?

post the 2 numbers so we can see... In general, replacing a Force with a Force is straight forward. Mercury Tracker Forces can be hooked up to Mercury controls, but it's different at the controls themselves, actually an adapter. If it's different in the serial range, then yeah your good. If the model number changes or has a different suffix, then there is a difference.

What hp, what year(s),

Lots of changes to Force motors during the ownership transition years.
Old style serial and model numbers, and new style serial numbers.

So, they may look the same, but may not have swappable parts.

ignition systems, fuel pump, tilt n trim units, gear cases, props, etc, may be different.

Examine closely.

Post up some photos.

3 years, I think, of the Merc-Force motors so if it's one of them maybe one had a Force serial # and the other started getting the Merc influence?

They both are 1998 mine has a serial of OE336883 and the one I bought for $200 OE329174. Both are 120hp, elpt. Both are mercury lower units I believe. Same length and everything

Yes, the model numbers may be the same on 2 motors, but each motor will have its own unique serial number.

1998 model Merc/Force motor serial numbers fall between OE288000 and OE344999 .

All parts on those 2 motors should be interchangeable.

Sounds like a great deal, any one part could have cost you double that price.

The years to really watch ALL parts, are 1990-1992, and some gear cases through 1994.
ignitions 1996 and later were CDM, and 75 hp changed gearcase in 1998.

Thanks! I already settled out the starter, which would have almost been what I paid for the whole thing!!

1999 Merc. dropped the whole line.(so you have one the last ones built lol)
Yours is a Merc. ignition & merc. style Lower unit but still a Force power head with Merc. fuel-pump
