There is no way we can get the fuel out of the tank and have the tank cleaned. Please, please note the two words just said "no way". We can try to use up as much of the gas that's in it when we get the boat back, but draining the tank and cleaning it, just isn't going to happen.
Every part on the Q-Jet carb we now have is 100% clean and new. A highly qualified marine mechanic, who has worked on our boat before, told us that. And, we totally believe him!
He is going to call National Carburetors in Jacksonville, Florida and get some information about the Q-Jet we just bought and is now on the boat engine.
This mechanic, who has worked on our boat since October 2019, told just how good the boat starts and runs. He said, "this boat hasn't started and engine ran this good since I first worked on it."

doesnt matter if your carb is clean now. trying to run the goo in your tank and you will end up back where you are.

pay the mechanic to clean the tank. they basically remove the inspection hatch. remove the sender, suck out the goo, pressure wash the internal surfaces of the tank, use simple green to chemically clean it, pressure wash again. then vacuum it dry.

What about the gas still in it? The Service can't remove that. They have no way to dispose of it. We have to get the boat back so we can hire someone to transport to Nevada for us. We do plan on launching the boat one more time here, before having it transported.
Anyway, he has already ran the boat on the lake next to the marine service. After he done that, he called and told us, other than the carb secondaries, how great it ran.
Actually, we have a friend than ran his 1992 Bayliner on 7 year old gas and he told us "it ran fine".

After 45 posts it sounds like a no-win situation. Perhaps, sell the boat as is . . . find another hobby/recreational activity.

Well, I've come to find out that, sometimes, asking about something on a forum isn't the best thing to do, unfortunately. There are those on boat forums that detest any marine mechanic, but that's their feelings, not everyone's.
We believe, and trust, what this mechanic, and the service department he works in, has told us, so..............that's it!

Then in all seriousness, what's the point of posting? Let your mechanic figure it out for you. Especially if you trust him to do everything, let him do it.

We all have limits in terms of what's the best service we can find for whatever we like doing, however there are certain things that just don't make sense, not getting rid of old gas, is one of them. Ask a tech rep from Mercruiser if you should run a boat on 3-year-old gas and I bet you they'll say no way. Going back to what I advised about carb rebuilds, I'm sure people in the state of Colorado restore old cars. Old cars have old gas in the tank that should not be used. There is a way to deal with these problems, that shop just doesn't want to do it. Here in Long Island there are companies that will do it. And we are the land of "NO" as I call it, over-regulated and over-taxed. But a simple carb rebuild, get rid of old gas, that we can do.

I agree with nolamike. This forum isn't a tool to be used for vetting your mechanic's advice/skills. It's designed to help people repair their own boats

I'll admit it's been amusing watching this thread and reading the vast amount of pragmatic advice you almost immediately disagree with or say that it cannot be done.

Reminds me of a fellow mechanic I worked with, super nice guy but he just didn't get troubleshooting. He would routinely skip over multiple steps in diagnosis and rarely figure anything out without the help of another mechanic. He'd get frustrated, swear, throw tools, pace around, etc. It was funny the first couple times but not long after it became annoying. It seemed someone was always trying to point him in the right direction, even on issues he'd dealt with in the past. A definite pattern developed of him not being able to figure out much of anything.

A common situation with him and myself would be me asking him if he had checked a crucial step in the process and he'd reply that he didn't because he assumed it was okay due to whatever excuse he had. You can't skip a troubleshooting step simply because you think said component/test is sound. You need fair witness of everything otherwise you are setting yourself up for failure every time.

He eventually became the trailer and fluid change guy in the shop and yes, he'd still find a way to screw up those jobs.

Ok, maybe I came on too strong an I apologize.. understand there are many very knowledgeable folks here on the forum who are and have been trained mechanics and have been into the game and know how it is.. yes there are some like myself whom fly by our pants .. I think you should just hang a bit and read and gather information in all the threads and you will see the wealth of knowledge that this forum offers..
