I`m setting up my Q6 for some spring time fishing, and am realizing how little I know about boats. I have purchased a W55 motorguide trolling motor and bass pro xps 175 deep cycle battery. As an afterthought I`ve realized, how am I going to keep the trolling battery charged? I haven`t purchased a charger yet, and am trying to decide if I want a deep cycle charger I can keep in the garage, or an onboard charger. What are you guys using out there? Mc Cownk, I`m having my trolling motor mount plate modified like yours. It will be done today. Hope they don`t screw it up!

On the surface, it would seem an automotive charger would be fine, and it is okay. But an on board charger maintains your batteries during the winter months, without much attention from you. Plus it will charge multiple batteries, depending on the number of banks you need.

I use the automotive style to charge the batteries before heading out. I will be looking into a switch or some type of onboard charger in the near future. This will be handy to charge the trolling motor battery while the engine is running and also in case you need the trolling motor battery for emergency starting as a back up to the starting battery.

On board charger hands down IMO.... You can get a 2 bank 5 amp charger for under $100 or a little over and when not in the water plug it up and forget about it... 100% charged all the time... Also get a switch if you plan to be on the trolling motor hard all day long.. Just switch it to both batteries when underway to charge up the trolling battery going from spot to spot..
