Thought I share my repower of my 89 Pursuit 2700 open. After 28 years she is starting to show her age. The hull is still good shape and the interior was redone when we bought it 4 years ago. I had been having minor mechanical issues one after another over the last year and was spending more weekends working on the boat than fishing.
So after talking with the admiral and discussing options, whether to buy another boat or repower and refresh the Allison-Belle. We decided to bring her back to her former glory.
Here's the to do list:
1.New motors
2. Rebuild or replace Velvet drive 1:5 to 1 transmissions.
3.Replace all above water line thru hulls to stainless steel and install shut offs.
4. Check all below bronze thru hulls repair or replace if needed.
5. New hoses
6. New wire harness for engines
7. New gauges
8. Bottom Paint boat is wet slipped all year.
9. Build hard top
10. Re-core rear deck hatch
11. Add Auto pilot if budget allows.

Worked on the new instrument panel yesterday. Used 1/2 inch starboard, round of bit on the edges. Used propane torch to bend the starboard to match the radius of the old panel. I have a little bit of clean up work to do on the dash for the new panel to fit
Replaced the old vdo gauges with polished stainless gauges from Hardin Marine.

Can't believe two months has passed since my last post!. I have been working on the boat. Just doing boring stuff like scraping and sanding and painting parts.
I feel like I have been on the worlds longest scavenger hunt. Many of the parts I'm replacing are no long made and have been replaced with new parts. So I have had to do a lot of cross referencing of part numbers.
I did finally get my new motors and transmissions.
My shop is looking like Christmas with the pile of new parts.

I have finished gutting the wire harness, new dash has been fitted and new location for the vhf has been cut out. Next up is to rebuild the wire harness and dash. I have already pulled in the home runs for the engine harness. Hope to get most of that knock out this weekend.

I was planning on taking the\motors down this weekend but they will have to wait a week. We are taking delivery of our new park home on Monday, so I will be spending most of next week getting it squared away.
Have to get a plumber out to tie the sewer in, propane tank inspected. Can't do these things myself as they have to certified for insurance and warranty.
We also have a big deck that I will have to reconfigured to fit the park home. My list never gets smaller, it just keeps getting change orders.
The motors do look good.

Slowly moving forward on this project. Last time I was down I got the dash fitted and got the cut out for the radio done. Also removed the old sump pump that no longer worked.
Have the waste tank ready to remove. Going to replace the head with a porta potty. I'm tired of fighting the damn head!
Removing the waste tank will allow me to relocate the batteries and washdown pump. The other benefit is it will give more room when working on the motors.

Got the motors and transmissions dropped in the boat on 6/3.
I had a bunch of pictures of all the work I had done up till the day of the motors going in. Of course my phone decided to lockup and I had to do a factory reset, so all those photos are gone.

List of what has been done to this point:
90% of wiring is complete.
New Nav lights installed.
New console is installed.
Bilge has been cleaned and painted.
All thru hulls have been checked and are good to go.
Initial line up of motors has been completed

This is the only picture I have from install day

Engine wiring harness is now complete. Both engines will turn over and all gauges are working. Still have some wire management to do. Glad that that is done!

Over the weekend got most of the exhaust hooked up. Eddie will complete the port side on Monday. Got the fuel lines re-routed as went from mechanical fuel pumps to electric.

Finally got the boat back in the water last Sunday! Was trying for Saturday but we ran out of tide, so had to wait an extra day.
We started early on Saturday morning, the plan was to fire the motors while she was still on the hill so we could work thru any problems.
We started with the port motor and that went pretty smooth. Motor fire on the second hit of the key. Just after the motor fired we had water gushing out of the bottom of the exhaust riser. We forgot to put the plugs in the risers!
After putting in the plugs, we fired the motor again and let it run for a couple of minutes. Only issues we found were a couple of coolant lines and transmission lines that weren't tight. After we got those leaks square away we fired the motor again and let it run for a good 15 minutes.
We then moved onto the Starboard motor. The motor fired easily but after a minute the temp gauge went over 200 degrees. I quickly shut the motor down.
At the time we were thinking that no coolant was circulating thru the motor. We checked the raw side first and everything looked good there. We checked the closed side and could not find any problems with it.
We started the engine again and the temp gauge went to 200 almost immediately. With the engine running we checked the flow of water out the exhaust and that was good. Was able to put my hand on the manifold and it was not to hot to touch.
After shutting the motor off and letting it cool for a bit. I pulled the thermostat and found it was only partially open. So we decide to see what would happen if we ran it without the thermostat .
Fired the motor for a third time and the gauge went down to 180 degrees and then gradually move above 200. Listening to the motor it didn't sound like it was that hot. If it was over 200 it would start complaining. I grab my temp gun out of the truck and measured temperature all over the manifolds, heat exchangers, risers and intake and it never read over 150 degrees. At this time we figured we had a bad thermostat and faulty sending unit.
Eddie said he'd put the boat in if I wanted. I told him, I would wait until I was sure we had this cooling issue resolved. After discussing it for a bit it was decide that if I was able to get the issue resolved Saturday afternoon that he would come down on Sunday and put the boat in.
It took the rest of the day but I finally figured out the issue was due to the sending units. I used Harding gauges and apparently I need to use their sending units. Also found that the port gauge was reading 40 degrees off.

Splash part 2
Met Eddie early Sunday morning to get the boat in the water by 10:30.
We connected the hoses to the raw water pumps back up and made sure all connections were tight. Cleaned up the deck and got all unnecessary tools and parts out of the cockpit.
We then got the slings under the boat and lifted the boat off the stands so we could paint the spots where the boat was setting on the stands. Put the zincs on the shafts, rudders, and trim tabs. Made one more check in the boat to make sure all hose connection were tight and the raw valves were open. Last thing I did before I got out of the boat was to make sure the plug was in and it was tight.
Time to head the boat to the water. When we got to the water, we made one more visual check of the boat to make sure we didn't miss anything.
Eddie eased her down to the water, with the boat still sitting in the sling I got on, once in the cockpit I made sure nothing was leaking or taking on water.
Nothing left to do but turn and the batteries on and hit the key. Started the port motor first, it started on the first hit of the key and then promptly died. Hit the key a couple of more times and noting. Problem was one of the leads got pulled of the fuel pump. Pressed it back on and put a tie wrap on it. Hit the key again and the motor started right away. Hit the key on the starboard motor and it started on the first hit.
We let the motors warm up and get operating temp for a bout 10 minutes.
My gauges were still reading 180 -200 degrees. We got out the temp gun and check the at the thermostat housing , heat exchangers , intake, exhaust manifolds, and risers and the temp there was following the thermostat temp. Port motor was reading 140's and starboard in the 160's (starboard has 160 thermostat).
Eased her into reverse out of the sling and out of the dock. Headed down the water way for a short sea trial. We ran her down past the Holden beach bridge and turn around just past Provisions and headed back to her slip. Never took her past 1200 rpms. The boat ran great, much smoother and quieter than before.
No major issues were found during the run. Issues that we found packing nuts were too tight needed to be backed off a bit. Port motor oil filter had a slow drip around the oil filter seal, starboard dipstick was dripping a bit and needed to be tightened. The biggest issue was to figure out why the temp gauges were so far off. Other than that it was a successful first sea trial.
