1985 XR2 150 ser#A166545.

Symptom changes, at first nice full stream out of tell tale steaming hot, no pressure gauge just a temperature gauge. Engine would run about ¾ hot normally. After sitting two years
I decided to put the boat back on the water. Cleaned the carbs & cyl with Deep creep, drained all the old fuel in tank, premixed the new fuel even though the oil injection appears to be working fine. Fired it up with the muffs on and after about 1 minute nice stream out of tell tale. Put it on the lake, took off about the time I got on plane O/H alarm (steady beep) goes off. I used trolling motor to get back. Replaced both thermostats, they were stuck partially closed, and replaced poppet valve assy, tested with muffs, nice stream at idle. Put it on the lake, same thing. This time I put new water pump kit #46 96148T 8 in. If you can see the photo the seal inside pump housing was chewed up where it seals around the shaft. I believe I put it together correctly but now with muffs I have a slow dribble out the tell tale after thermostats open, and water also coming out exhaust, prop, and now around poppet. Should I seal the poppet cover and pump assembly with silicone? I would appreciate any help I can get.

Re: Pump seal damaged

When you say that water is coming out the exhaust, do you mean the upper exhaust ports, or out the prop exhaust only, or both?

About the water leaking out of the poppet, that is a symptom that the poppet is not seated well into the block recess, and also that the diaphram is not seated well into the cover plate groves...

Re: Pump seal damaged

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, at first i thought water was coming out of exhaust & prop area, but it turns out water is dribbling down from tell tale and exhaust is blowing it out. There is a fair amount of water coming out of the prop area. I am going to take out the poppet & reseat it this afternoon. It was corroded and i cleaned the cover before installing diaphram but there may be some debris holding it open.
