I have a 1990 four winns sundowner 225 with a omc stern drive and a 460 king cobra the motor lost oil pressure and I am going to have to probably pull out the motor and I have never pulled a boat motor how is it attached to the transmission and any other tips?

Re: Pulling a 460 motor out

I have an omc 800, the motor simply unbolted from the bellhousing like a manual transmission car. Then just unbolt the front mount, all the wires, headers and pull it forward a couple inches. I chained it to the roof of my shop to pull it, but used a friends bobcat to put the new motor in.
Im not sure if the cobra is the same, but id suspect its similar.

pull the outdrive, pull the bellhousing bolts, exhaust ect. I/O's are usually pretty simple to get the engines free. ( often tricky to get them out of the boats ). The 460 is an engine that I would recomend a rated lift apparatus for. It is 750 lbs from carb to pan, so even a 2 ton engine crane is stressed when you extend the boom to the 1k lbs setting. I would actually recomend pulling the intake and heads off to get weight off of your hoist.

How is the flywheel attached to the transmission or dose it slip out because after I pull the water pump and acc I will only have maybe 6 inches of space in front of the motor

Flywheel and coupler should come out togther, tho you might want to check. I'v never been into a King Cobra setup.. Be careful. I'm pretty sure that coupler is NLA

Yes. Remove the drive FIRST.

Then remove the engine (big & heavy!)

if you're going to tear it down, that helps. Just removing the manifolds and risers makes a huge difference.

The coupler is available from Sierra Marine 18-21754

It's the exhaust manifolds that are no longer available (except "new-old-stock") For that reason, if your manifolds are even a bit questionable, NOW would be a good time to consider repowering.

New manifolds and risers might cost MORE than a rebuilt engine (if you can find them)

There's stainless steel manifolds available but just ONE of them costs as much as a rebuilt engine!!

I had a 460 King Kobra in my boat (below) I was able to sell it all for about $3500 piece by piece over a few years!

Good luck!
