Greetings all, I have a 62' Evinrude outboard that I was attempting the change the lower unit oil on. Unfortunately, I removed the wrong screw and cannot get it to go back in. The screw is located in the drivers side of the lower unit at the same level as the real drain plug. The screw is about an inch long and tipped with a smooth surface before the threads. Something inside the motor has moved down and blocked the entrance? I can put a screwdriver inside and move it back up but it falls back down when I remove the tool. Surely there is a way to get this thing back in. Any advice for the new boating idiot? I can send a picture if it would help. Thanks in advance, I hope :)

Been there done that.
Not familiar with the motor at all but I would guess it is probably shifting linkage of some type. Try moving your shifter and see if it helps with alignment. An assistant would be helpfull.
Good Luck
Mike ;)

Try laying the motor on it's side then alinging it before replacing the mystery screw. Let gravity be your friend. good luck!

I did that in a blind hole on a car latch once. If you can move it up enough to get a needle with a hook bent into the end of it, you can hold the piece up with the needle . While it is lined-up, dab the corners with 5 minute epoxy, and hold it until it sets. Then you can carefully and gently start the screw threads. It worked for me.
Dmessy's idea will sure help too,as you wont have to stand there and hold the piece in place while it sets.

You removed the shift cradle screw. Phillips head, right? Just look inside and you will see the metal piece. This must continue to be free to move. As stated, lay it on it's side and take something like an ice pick to line up the hole and replace the screw.

Good luck!
