Pull the engine or is there another way?

So I thought I was just doing timing today but after hooking up the muffs
we found that one of the freeze plugs popped.

Of course , It had to be the one right behind the engine mount.

Do we need to remove the engine to replace the plug
or is there another way to get access to it?

Ayuh,.... How much access does the hull allow,....

You could pull the drive, support the motor, 'n remove the motor mount to put the plug in, If the hull allows....
Otherwise, Pull the drive, then the motor, to fix it....

Who winterized it, 'n how was it done,....

An engine swap is in the cards... But it will be a next winter project.

Need to put all the new stuff on and run the motor to confirm it is in fact even leaking. When we ran it last weekend, I did not notice any water leaking from the block anywhere. Just the manifolds. There is also no rust trails leading off the block or the suspected crack in the block.
By the time I reset the timing on the boat while its running ... it should be plenty hot to see if the block is truly leaking

Ayuh,... Looks like next winter has already gotten here,....

No need to reassemble, 'n run the motor,....

just pull the motor, replace the core plug, 'n pressure test the block like Don says...

Sounds like a New long block is in yer immediate future...

I'm with Bond-o, time to pull the engine.

Yeah. I am agreeing with all of you.

Find yourself a wrecking yard engine and swap everything over.....

Sorry about that,

Sorry it took so long to reply. Had to drive home today after another 2 day boat repair session.

We found that after proper support....

We were able to completely remove the engine mount to get access to the freeze plug.

Popped a new plug in and figured ... what the heck.. if the block cracked .. don't have to worry about much more
anyways so .. we ran it. For 3 hours. Pulled the valve covers, dip stick and oil filter
to check for milky oil and .. nothing, oil still looks good. Also ran another compression test
with the same results. 120 in every cyl and 100 in the last.

Honestly.. I think the freeze plug saved the day. Checked for water leaks under the engine every half hour while
running and completely dry. Even put the engine under some load and all good. The idle even cleaned up
amazingly after we reset the timing. I.D.K guys.. I think there's still hope.

If you ran it on muffs, that doesn't always show block cracks. Not near the flow or pressure and heat the engine build up when in the water under load.

LOL.. then I guess there's one thing left to do! As soon as the ice burgs finishing melting off the lake.. Its time to go for a spin. We definitely were not blowing any white smoke so that's 1 hurdle cleared.

Should probably get the new bilge pump wired in before we go though.

No such thing as a "Freeze Plug" They're called Core plugs and are there to remove sand after the casting process. They do not protect against freeze damage.

The only way you'll know for sure that you don't have cracks will be either to pressurize the block and see if it holds, or run it.

Since you have the manifold off and the hoses exposed, it would be an easy task to hook up an air compressor and check it. That way, if you are truly lucky and it's not cracked, you can get it ready for summer and not have to worry about it. OTOH, if it is cracked, you can get to finding another long block and maybe have it ready in time for summer instead of having to fool with it after it ruins your vacation.

Re: Pull the engine or is there another way?

My freeze plug popped behind the motor mount, determined not to pull the engine I came up with this solution- I grabbed a piece of flat stock steel I had hanging around, the kind with the holes in it from the hardware store. Its about a foot or so long, and 1 1/2" o so. I slipped the plug into position and carefully slid the flat stock in on top/behind the plug, I then grabbed my long craftsman flat screw driver and hammered it in between the stock and the mount like a wedge pushing the plug into the hole. This distributes the force evenly over both side of the plug. It went in perfectly flush, it was not real easy but far easier than pulling the mount.

It begs the question, how are you people winterizing these motors?

Well right around February when I start running all my summer time plans through my head, I come to the realization that I didn't winterize.

The funny part is I just put the engine in last summer, never had a chance to take the boat out because of other projects.

Some people learn the hard way.
