pull starter

i have a red band 100 hp merc with a pullstarter( & key)but it just free pulls. does it need to be engaged somehow or is it broken.id really like to have it fixed in case i ever need it, also could sombody give me some info on the motor ie. year top speed ect sn is 1539884 thanks

Ussally the grease on the friction plate gets hard on a electric start engine and won't let the dogs engage, take the starter off and clean it then relube it

notrhing wrong with the key start just want to know how to pull start it

Same prob with the pull start, pull it off and clean up but do not grease just silicone spray, also check and see if the engacement lugs fling out to catch the fly wheel ring or if they may be woren out. when you pull the recoil out fast with it off the motor two or three little lugs shoud pop out to engage. These things need to move freely.

chocky, What laddiesservice meant was the manual starter tends to fail from low usage,because you have electric start,and use it most of the time,rather than pull start it.<br /><br />We all agree,your manual starter needs to be dissassemled for cleaning,lubing and reassembly.Also replace worn parts.I use 2stroke oil for lube.<br /><br />DHP
