I recenlty purchased a 1979 2hp Evinrude with "15 minutes of use" - but a lifetime of salt water corrosion. Actually, its in reasonable shape, but there's just a lot of salt and corrosion around the various springs/moving part. I've rebuilt the carb, change the spark, cleaned the fuel tank/lines/filter, but now the pull cord seems to be shot.
At first it would recoil about 50% of the way bak in, but after a few rips it wouldn't recoil at all. I sprayed WDD-40 under the flywheel and a good amount of rust flowed out. The flywheel and flywheel cover which holds the wrapped cord are in great shape, but I suspect the spring is gone. It now can be manually turned in either direction (although roughly) and doesn't recoil more than an inch or so. There is one screw throught he engine cover (a big DO NOT REMOVE on it). I can't for the life of my budge this screw. Is it a reverse thread? Is there anyone out there who's been down this road and can offer some words of advice? I don't even know what the spring looks like underneath, or how it works - can't get the flywheel off.
