Pros/cons MPI vs. carb?

Re: Pros/cons MPI vs. carb?

I think what is interesting is when you look at the engine section on this site its always people with a carb posting about points, rebuilding the carb, timing, fuel pump issues. Why in the world someone would want to deal with that is beyond me. I just turn the key on my boat and go. I don't want to be sitting there messing with the timing or trying to figure out why a float is stuck open. I rarely see posts about EFI systems having issues on this site. No where near the amount of posts I see about carbs.

I've had nothing but carbs, don't really have to many problems with them and the rebuilds and tuning aren't to bad when it's time (only rebuilt 1 carb on a boat, many on trucks). That said, if I had the money for newer boats I'd be MPI all the way. I've gotten used to working on EFI cars and trucks and they don't worry me anymore, benefits far outweigh the negatives in my opinion.

I find it hard to believe that they still put carbureted engines in new boats. Fuel injected engines are more powerful, more efficient and more reliable.

They don't its just left over inventory. As of 2012(I think) you can not make them any more and as of 2013 they have to have cats. If you see a new boat with a carb or wit MPI but no cats its "new" old stock inventory that the boat or motor manufacture had in stock.

There are plenty of EFI issues on this site. There could be a reason why you see more carb posts but I bet the ratio of carb to EFI problems is because of the sheer number of carbs.

Most of the people that are having problems with carbs are older boats(pre EFI) using old bad fuel. Do the same thing these people are doing with an EFI system and you will have clogged injectors. Trust me, the cost and ease of getting a carbed boat back running is far easier than getting a boat with a set of clogged injectors going again.

I would say that another reason you don't see EFI issues brought up on this site is because this is a "do it yourself" site. Since most people have way more confidence figuring out a carb issue than an EFI issue, most EFI issues are being sent to a dealer who has the proper test equipment and scan tools to diagnose problems properly.

And don't forget about the ignition points..... a lot cheaper to fix than those expense electronic ignition modules.

LOL If forgot about points. When I was 13 I just loved replacing/setting them in my '91 Honda XR80 dirt bike to keep it running worth a dang. The only good thing I can say about points and carb is that I learned a lot as a kid keeping my toys running.

I knew it was only a matter of time before some one said that their Carb would survive the post zombie apocalypse rapture world.

The biggest Pro for EFI has yet to be stated and that is that EFI has the ability to change air/fuel mixture automatically, this is important to those of us who trailer our boats and live in the mountains but boat all over, doesn't matter if we boat at 7000' elevation or 2500' MPI does it all by itself, Carb needs to be rejetted, just food for thought.
