From other states around the country we are known as Tax-A-chusetts. I find that the only reason for this is that it rhymes

After reading these blogs, Masssachusetts is one of the cheapest states to live in.

So I walk into Bruegger's Bakery to buy a fresh baggle that they just made. The clerk asks "do you want that cut?"

Guess what - In NY, you don't get charged sales tax for uncut baggles but you do get charged NY sales tax if the bakery that made it, cuts it. WTF

Of course if I walk into the bakery with a knife big enough to cut my own baggle, I'd probably get arrested!

Ironic that if I go to a grocery store & buy a loaf of sliced white bread or even some sliced frozen bagles - no tax.

I'm not making this up.

Or in MN, the land of 10,000 taxes(instead of lakes). I see WI is right up there too......

SC max sales tax on a car, boat,rv is $300.00. no matter the cost. If this is the OP first tax bill on the boat that $300.00 dollars sales tax may be included. You do not pay sales tax/PP tax on a vehicle until you registered it. If I remember correctly. The PP tax on my 96 bow rider (10K value) is less than a 90 bucks. And my truck (2004 F250 4X4 Super Duty Extended Cab) for comparison was right at $200.00.

Unfortunately, nope. I paid the sales tax at time of purchase (dealer handled reg. for me), which was in 10/2009. I now know what people mean when they say boat stands for "break out another thousand." Between insurance, taxes, routine maintenance, and gas, there's no break.

Interesting fact: Up until a recent court decision, my county was holding new owners responsible for previous owners' back-taxes. Luckily the DNR people saw this as B.S. and allowed people to register their boats anyway, without paying other peoples back taxes. One of my co-workers got tied up in this mess - he bought a bass boat from dealer and when he got his tax bill, it showed two years of back taxes from before he owned the boat. He simply mailed in a check for the current taxes, and 6-8 weeks later the county would send him a refund check. By them cashing his check and him NOT cashing the refund checks, it constituted the county legally "accepting" his payment. County finally got sued from what i understand and has changed their ways.

I know why MD is number 4, because of Baltimore.
Every investment property I buy, I have to appeal the tax assessment value. Of course they never drop it to what I paid for the house, that would make sense but I can lower my tax burned on each property $700-$1000 a year.

I was looking at one property recently, which would have made a really nice rental and investment. It was listed at $60K but it's taxes where $5K! I passed as I wasn't sure how much they would have dropped the assessment from it's current value of $257K.

I know people who live in Baltimore with $10K tax bills!

I know very few people on Long Island near me with less than $10K property taxes! That's for 1/4 acre and <2000sf.

I hear you. The people I know with 8-10K have no acreage, and live in rowhomes, albeit nice rowhomes.

Ramsey county is raising property taxes this year. Whoohooo! Glad I don't live ON the lake. My dad built in a cornfield 28 years ago. Today it's a subburb with the taxes to go with it. He is livid!

Here in BC we are paying 12% provincial (state equivalent) tax on most everything but not food.
As for property tax,...we here in Victoria our yearly taxes are about $2600 on an assessed home value of $580K (in town- not rural).
I'm ok with that given the overall value of things and certainly vs. what we paid for the house originally.
It's not about min/max amounts as far as I'm concerned....it all comes down to daily quality of life....and I'm glad to say it's pretty damn good.:)

That's pretty low for property tax BP, not bad. Luckily where I live(rural) the tax assessment is actually lower than true market value. I pay a fraction of what the people in Baltimore city pay, and I have a much larger house, acreage, and an almost non-existent crime rate.
I will agree, quality of life is good, and important!

HI BP, those rates for the lower mainland and island are high compared to up here in the rurals, (with the exception of the Okanogan cities)

5.65 acres, 3000 square foot house, 30x40 shop plus out buildings.
$1100 in property tax on a $385.000 gov value.
Guy down the road just sold non developed land, 20 acres for $650.000.

From where i'm sitting that don't look too bad. Behind my house in Pembroke Pines there is an approx three acre pond, the city insists that it's a small lake therefore my property is deemed as waterfront property and that entitles me to fork out an extra "6.75% added value assessment" on my property taxes, WTF! Not withstanding the fact that property values have tanked here in South Florida. I just knew that they were trying to ream me, my next door neighbour thought that he'd seen and heard it all until he saw his tax bill. It's a never ending battle down here to get one's property value readjusted, in 2008 it was 15.5K and i got it down to 11K, in 2009 the bill jumped back up to 15.5K, after going thru all of the BS with them i finally got it back to 11K. I don't as yet know what it's going to be this time around, all this for a house that i live in for maybe four to six months per year. I would love to sell the darn thing if i could, the South Florida housing market really really sucks.

Yeah Skargo, it isn't too bad...could be a lot worse. My in-laws in Saskatchewan (Prairies) are in a slightly different situation where their relatives values are lower...around $200k on average and their property taxes are about 50% higher...for some reason?
We have a pretty good city lot size tho' at 13,500ft2....Now, if I just around to building that frikkin' shop like you and RBH (...like I need another project this year:D:D)

That's nothing if a certain somebody in MN gets hired on Tuesday the state portion of the property taxes will double for homes worth $1M or more in addition to the 6 other revenue raisers proposed. It sounds like a lot but in the mid 2000's those so called $1M homes were bought everywhere. http://wcco.com/realitycheck/mark.dayton.taxes.2.1986063.html

None of that stuff here in TX.......
Only sales tax and (real estate) property tax. No state income tax.
