OK, Pulled lower unit on 78'evinrude 175hp
Model #175849C Serial# J0001714

Found Forward, reverse, and clutch torn up pretty bad. Rounded over all clutch teeth. Yeahhhhhh!!!

Question?
1- Pinion looks good, but with damage done should replace Pinion and bearing?
2- Propeller shaft worn where reverse rides, only half way around. Replacing propeller shaft necessary, or is expected?

Sorry if these seem obvious, just looking for advice.

Finally, make sense to replace bearing while there?

Thanks for your help

Carl Hugie
Steury

Re: Propeller Shaft

I'd replace every worn part while I have it open.

I'm with MarkC. You've already got it torn down, don't take any chances with worn parts wearing out your new ones.
Good luck on the rebuild.

Re: Propeller Shaft

Thanks guys, this does seem reasonable. Will order the necessary parts and get the thing back in the water.

Steury

Re: Propeller Shaft

This would be your "call". It appears that with all that damage, it may be cheaper to find a good used l/u, or even one that needs seals, at a boat salvage yard,or on the web.
What i mean is, it may cost you more for the gearset than a good used l/u complete would cost.
Just a sujestion tho.

Re: Propeller Shaft

Good point 12footer. In fact I just found a lower unit off a 1979 evinrude 150. My manual states they are all the same save the 20 or 25inch transom. Do you think this would work? If is incredibly cheaper then the parts to rebuild. Plus gives me a second unit in case something blows up.

Any thought greatly appreciated.

Carl/steury

Re: Propeller Shaft

Change all the worn parts. That shaft that is warn only halfway would concern me. It could have been caused by torque or improper alignment. Your in it this far.....do it right. I would hate to hear you had to do it twice. Good luck.

As 12Footer says, it's your call. What do you know about the condition of the '79 L/U?
