You have made one of the most common mistakes.--------Take the lower unit off again.------Put the control in nuetral.----Turn the shift shaft on the lower unit till you get nuetral.-----Then assemble.

Racerone..how do I know when I have neutral on the shift shaft? When the prop spins free in both directions by hand?

Forward and Reverse Gears are Reversed?

I have a 1986 Mercury 115 Inline 6. I just dropped the lower unit changed the impeller put it back on and it was stuck in reverse in all gear positions. Took it back off found neutral on the shift shaft put it back together and now forward is reverse and Reverse is forward? ??

That is nearly impossible.---But explain in detail how you determined that it was in nuetral on the lower unit !!

Racerone..I did as you said and pulled the lower unit back off..turned the shift shaft until the prop spun freely in both directions..which was all the way clockwise..put it back and everything ran fine but when placed in forward the prop spun in reverse and vice versa..took it off again and turned the shift shaft the opposite direction and found "another neutral" where the prop spun freely..put it back together and all gears were neutral..tried it one more time and I was back at the first problem but stuck in forward instead of reverse.

Take a good look at the shift mechanism on the motor.---You will observe that from forward to nuetral is a COUNTERCLOCKWISE turning motion.--So turn the driveshaft and see if it is in FORWARD.--The turn the shiftshaft counterclockwise and find nuetral.--Then assemble..

If the gearcase is truly in reverse, you will want to turn the shift shaft clockwise to find neutral. However, I suspect you have the gearcase in reverse, and never mated the upper shift shaft with the lower shift shaft, when you installed the gearcase.

As its all still related to reassembling the lower unit correctly, I merged the 2 topics about forward and reverse being backwards and that the prop spinning in reverse in all shift positions.

I had this happen to my Merc 500 the first time the impeller was replaced. Many years ago. Can't remember exactly how it was fixed, but it was just a simple fix after pulling the lower off.

Before it was fixed it made for a fun time at the launch.:D

I have never had a lower unit apart but could it be possible that where he found neutral, the shaft was 180 degrees out? Only way I can see it would make forward go to reverse and he said he found "another" neutral.

Yes, there are two "neutrals" on the older Mercs. If you find yourself where the shift is backwards, you are in the wrong neutral. I would think you need to turn the shifter CCW to get to forward and then to the correct neutral.

One time long ago, we tried to go water skiing on my friends boat. We had replaced the impeller and had the shifter backwards. His father had replaced the steering drum and had the cable wrapped backwards. So when the skier yells "hit it" you pull the throttle back to accelerate and turn right to go left......interesting day
