I have a 1986 150hp Mercury. I recently reinstalled lower unit after impeller change. When the boat is in forward, prop ratchets clockwise, but when I put it in reverse it doesn't ratchet at all. It locks both ways. Is this supposed to happen, or is something wrong in my lower unit?

Sure , the shape / configuration of the dogs on the forward gear and clutch dog.----And the simple fact that the clutch dog is spring loaded into forward gear.-----Have a look at some of these parts yourself.

Make this your desktop bkgnd. Don't shift into reverse without a.) engine running or b.) turning prop at the same time without engine running. lushiftsetup.jpg
