I have a 2002 2855 ciera with a 350 mag mpi engine and a Bravo 3 outdrive 2.00 r. We usually go out with a full tank of gas and water and 2 people. On a good day we have been able to get 3200 rpm 28 kt at wot, most days it is closer to 20 - 22kt. It also takes a long time to get up to that speed.
I lost the rear prop this weekend (3x3 22P) and am wondering if I should take this opportunity to change the pitch to get better performance?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Joe

what RPM and speed were you pulling when you were on plane, fully trimmed out, with the throttle mashed as far as it would go as you tried to push the throttle thru the boat?

that is the RPM and speed that is needed.

If you only ever got 3200 RPM, you are either over-weight, down on power, or wrong pitch / gear ratio.

3200 rpm is the max. Not much extra for weight on board besides the gas and water, a cooler and a couple of fishing poles.

If I am not mistaken that motor should be turning at about 5k rpm at wot. but I am not positive of the max rpm that motor should be running. just by going off the easy math of each inch of pitch is 250 to 300 rpms (this is debatable but just a base point) It sounds like you should go down 6 to 7 inches of pitch. I would guess that a 15 to a 17 pitch might be a good starting point.

Start with a compression test. Your cylinders should be between 135psi on the low end and 150.

Check your weight.

Make sure your throttle cable is pulling your throttle wide open

No way to prop low enough to gain 1800 RPM. You have an issue somewhere

Your WOT RPM should be 4600-5000
I would start with doing a compression test to make sure your motor is strong

hi. I honestly can't imagine that you are genuinely only seeing 3200 rpm. certainly at least, it is very unlikely that the boat in question is able to ever see 28 knots at only 3200 rpm, I would imagine. I think it perhaps more likely that the tachometer is reading wrong. Being a bravo 3 and should it be original to the boat, almost most of the time, the propping of the boat from new is usually very close to as good as it gets. What props are on her currently ? something along the lines of a pair of 22' or nearby would be the kind of numbers you'd be looking for on the props.

Although I am not familiar with working on anything with a duel prop setup, I disagree on the statement "No way to prop low enough to gain 1800 RPM." but it would have to be an extreme over propping issue in the first place that I feel you would have found engine lugging as a first sign. I agree with checking compression and making sure the motor is in good running condition and confirming you are getting real tach readings. This is a big heavy boat, 7200 lbs dry. even so, I have read that factory should run about 30 mph cruising speed with 40 mph top end. The 5.7 L. motor is the smaller motor but after a further short research, I have found others discussing same issues in other forums with no mentioned resolution, and also stating that an 18P prop is getting to the small end of what factory would agree to be using. I still personally feel that your boat may be over propped with a 22P (I can again admit if I am wrong) but may be experiencing any combination of other issues like being very heavily loaded, false RPM readings at the tach, motor old and tired, low on fuel pressure, dirty or stuck fuel injectors, (if this motor is equipped with a fuel injection system) in need of tune up, and or throttle not opening to WOT position. Start with what you plan on doing with the compression test and also check that the throttle plate is fully open at full throttle, I would plan to replace spark plugs if your compression readings are good as you have to pull them anyway to test compression. Might as well do wires, cap and rotor at the same time if all is well.

I agree with scott and check weight. 21 year old boat can gain water weight unless you've owned since new and kept under storage. Also if you have any friends with a similar boat and chevy block motor ride on his and see what it sounds like compared to theirs.
