prop size on 88 regal???

hello everyone im new to this forum figured id join up today... i currently have a 1988 19ft regal cuddy with a 3.0 mercruiser... i just replaced my prop and i put a 14.50 X 17...... the prop that came on the boat when i bought it was a 14.25x17... at WOT i am only turning 3950-4000 rpms!!!??? should i be turning more? i know the max for the engine is around 4600 i believe... the boat a REALLY slow!!! any suggestions on what size and pitch prop i shoiuld be using???? thanks in advance...

How about a Tune-Up,n a Compression Test..............

That 3.0l, in a 19' Boat should be able to pull a 17" prop to 4600rpms, WOT.........

Most 15" props are made for Barges'n Houseboats'n such..........

tune up was done... no compression test yet....the motor spun to 4400 rpms with a 13.75 x17 but wouldnt move... the bow went up but would never get up on plane......

Try some smart tabs. Describe a tune up.

plug,s wires, filters, didnt do the cap and rotor yet.... u think that would make that much of a diff???? i would hope so its easy enough..... i have nevr done points b4 though...any online manuals to help me? i know this boat has tohave more power bc honestly its rediculous....

Yes! It canmake a huge difference. The cap can be causing a huge misfire. Without points set correctly your dwell is doing god knows what. You might not even be getting a complete burn before the power stroke is over.

ok thank you i will get that done this weekend and get back to you.....just to let ya know my idle is good starts right up hopefully i can get it done and working properly.. do u know where i can get the gap and dwell that shoudl be set on my points and also what the timing should be set at ???

ok so i did points gap .022 cap rotor condensor wires, coil, and fuel filter set timing to 6 deg BTDC.. still only reving at 4050 rpms at WOT.........at a whopping 28mph.... what next ????????please help..

I would put this up in the mercruiser motor forum. Lot's of good wrenches there that could help you better than a bunch of prop jocks.
