Prop question....maintanence related

After replacing my water pump (previous post) successfully, I noticed a build up of heavy, black, sticky, soot-like accumulation, had formed along the inside diameter of the prop and prop housing. The spacer behind the prop was also covered in this gunk.

I used a bottle brush and some degreaser to remove this crud. It was a tough job! Tough meaning this unwanted residue stuck to everything. Even had a hard time cleaning my hands afterwards! Now this engine is only 3 years old, so I don't know if this is normal, or if I'm suppose to do this cleaning procedure every year, or if this is to be ignored?

Any input would be appreciated....Thanks! :)

dunno if yours is 2 or 4 stroke but stick your hands up the tail pipe of your car, allow time to cool first, and see if you get the same carbon.
the prop hub area is the tail pipe.
thats where the exhaust exits the motor above an idle.
sounds normal to me.

I use WD-40 and a brush for all my cleaning of residual oils/greases...works great. You should remove the prop every year, clean all old grease, and replace with fresh marine grease.
