Prop is too short, or shaft is too long??

Hi,

In order to have a spare prop I purchased on ebay this one: 48-13702-21, Quicksilver Mirage. My outdrive is Alpha One (Gen 2, I believe). The diameter, pitch and the number of splines are OK. But, when I tried to put it on, I found that the prop is shorter than needed!

When the prop is pushed all the way in, there is still about an inch or so of the splined shaft sticking out, and I cant tighten the nut. Is it a wrong prop? There is a metal hub in it (not the flow torque hub like on my other prop) not sure it can be replaced easily. The thrust washer is there.

Am I still missing another part, line a very thick washer or something, to place just before the nut? Any advice is very much appreciated.

Thank you.

The brass (thrust) washer is there. But the hub is not the one you just described, not a two-pice (plastic and brass) construction. I know what you talk about. My other prop is like you describe. But this one is different; the hub is sitting right in the prop and looks like one solid brass peice.

Thank you! This should work.

One more related question. The description of this part says "for rubber hub", but I dont see any rubber, what I see looks like brass. Is rubber somewhere inside the hub/propeller assembly, of it can be made of brass, instead of rubber. Is this OK? I heard that rubber is better to absorb the shocks from gears etc. Please, advise.

I believe the old mirages did have solid hubs. The castle washer will still work. As far as the solid hub, well just don't hit anything.;)

Some Mirage props were solid but that one is not. That is the old style pressed in rubber hub.

Dhadley is correct. On reviewing the photos, yours has a rubber hub (it is in there) . The solid hub on some mirages was small and clearly different.

Thank you, Dhadley.

Just want to make sure I understand.

That hub is indded pressed in, but its material does not look like rubber at all. To the touch, scratch and nock this is a metal, brass. You call it rubber why? Is there rubber incide? Or this is just a jargone? Or this is some kind of rubber that looks like brass to a newbie like me? Thanks.

Before you put the prop on thee is a thrust washer. Did you put that on? If you did and still have space at the the end you need a washer which will be about 1/4" thick. You can one on iboats or any place that sells props.

The part you can see is not rubber, the rubber in that particular hub is not "exposed". But there is rubber in there, you just can't see it unless you have the hub pressed out.
